ANAHEIM, Calif. -- All-Star second baseman Jeff Kent agreed Thursday to a $17 million, two-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

2004 SEASON STATISTICS

Kent, 36, hit .289 with 27 homers and 107 RBIs for the Houston Astros last season and made the NL All-Star team for the fourth time. Kent, who set a club record by hitting in 25 straight games, became a free agent when Houston declined a $9 million option and opted to pay a $700,000 buyout.

His 278 homers are the most by a second baseman and his seven seasons with 100 RBIs tied another mark for the position. He has a .289 career average with 302 homers and 1,207 RBIs in 13 seasons.

"Jeff has established himself as one of the best offensive players in the game,'' Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta said. "He's a proven run producer with significant postseason experience and we expect him to be a huge part of the Dodgers' offense next season.''

The highlight of his 2004 season was a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 5 of the NL championship series, putting the Astros within a victory of their first World Series appearance. Houston went on to lose the next two games in St. Louis.

Last season, Kent led the majors at his position with 107 RBI and tied for the major league lead in homers with 27.

"Adding Jeff Kent to our lineup not only gives us another major offensive force, but it provides me with flexibility in the field,'' manager Jim Tracy said.

Kent was NL MVP in 2000 and a three-time All-Star with San Francisco. He averaged 29 homers in six seasons with the Giants.

His image was tarnished when he told the Giants during spring training in 2002 that he had hurt his wrist while washing his truck. Reports later said Kent was hurt in a motorcycle accident.

Kent is a native of Bellflower, a Los Angeles suburb, and attended high school in Huntington Beach.

Los Angeles made the announcement at the hotel where the winter meetings start Friday.

Absolutely HORRIBLE move.

I think so too. Over-rated.

You should hear my dad. He's swearing up a storm (and he NEVER swears).

I was just laughing my ass off at his emotions. God its great working with your pops.

To top it off when I told him Cora may get non-tendered he damn near fell over and had a heart attack (cora is one of his favorites on the Dodgers) :D

Uh oh, he was a keeper on my fantasy team. Hmm, this sucks. Stupid pitchers' park.

Moneyball seems to know what he's doin over there.... we'll see.

Yikes!!!

Look at that contract. They better pray he has a monster year. I don't think he was a "must-have" for the Dodgers...very interesting.

Nah, it was more a Depodesta rant. He's been quiet on McCourt for a while, but those were the best :D

Damn, I never heard one of the rants, but I could imagine how good they would be.

Kent had a near-miss on a Mike Schmidt Moment.

Started to choke up, but caught himself.

Dammit....I LOVE the weepy athlete press conferences....pure 24-karat comedy GOLD.

Jeff Kent = Dick Vermeil.

:lolhitting
