Mr. Showtime Posted April 3, 2003 Share Posted April 3, 2003 N.Korea Says S.Korean Iraq Troop Decision a Crime North Korea said on Thursday South Korea decision to send non-combat troops to Iraq was a criminal act that would heighten tensions on the divided Korean peninsula, the South's Yonhap news agency reported. It quoted state-run North Korean television as saying public opposition in the South was "righteous and patriotic" because sending troops to Iraq meant supporting U.S. ambitions to invade North Korea. The United States, in the midst of a war against Iraq, has repeatedly said it has no plans to invade North Korea, which it suspects is trying to develop nuclear weapons. "It is an act of crime further endangering the situation on the peninsula," Yonhap quoted North Korean television as saying in a reference to Wednesday's parliamentary vote to approve the deployment of 700 medical and engineering troops to Iraq. The vote was a political victory for South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun in the face of widespread public opposition to the U.S.-led war to oust President Saddam Hussein.
