VERY true comment about Sandberg's clean uniform.

He'd slide on the bases, but RARE indeed was the defensive dive.

To this day, every time I see a second baseman miss a ball to his right with a wave of the glove, I think "Ahhhh, the Sandberg Wave..." :D

Sandberg was a very good hitter and an above-average defensive 2B, but IMO he should stand right alongside Ron Santo....on the outside looking in....

Another guy on the bubble. One issue is how much value to place on being a "complete" player. Could be he judged just in his offense and the defense be icing on the cake?

This becomes more interesting when you try to evaluate a DH.

Yeah, DHs are gonna be tough to guage. I think for DHs, their individual numbers/awards are going to carry a lot of weight, such as leading the league in HRs and RBIs, All-Star teams, etc.

Sandberg will have to rely on his bat and his somewhat misleading errorless streak to lift him into the Hall. I do think he'll get in, regardless of my opinion of him ( very very good but not great ).

I am a big believer that they need to get the closers into the HOF before they even look at Sandberg. Guys like Gossage, Sutter, and Lee Smith owned the game in a way that Ryno never did.

Do you think we need to get a closer in before a DH gets in?

Yes, but there are more guys who I feel deserve it than Ryne Sandburg. I think one, maybe two players at most should get in a year (with exceptions to extroadianry years). The HOF is and should always be special. I feel it is becoming too watered down. Every player in the league now seems to be HOF bound. All the talk of the Yankees with a full roster of HOF players is terrible.
