The inevitable in San Francisco is about to occur.

FOXSports.com has confirmed that the 49ers have fired head coach Dennis Erickson, a move that will be announced at a press conference later this afternoon. In fact, members of Erickson's staff, perhaps looking for work now, have already informed friends around the league that their coach has been let go.

It is also believed that GM Terry Donahue will not be retained, although it's unclear if he was fired, took a settlement, or stepped down.

FOX NFL Sunday first reported four weeks ago that such a move with Erickson would occur during or shortly after the season.

Tuesday, Dr. John York told FOXSports.com that he was still in meeting with both Erickson and Donahue and would continue to meet through Wednesday. Those meetings have apparently led to the end of Erickson's and perhaps Donahue's regimes in San Francisco.

York also met with the pair on Monday and on Sunday he acknowledged that this season was unacceptable and something had to change.

The 49ers have quickly become the Oakland A's of the NFL, except for that whole talent thing....

sucks for him he had no talent to work with just like wannsteadt

San Fran is terrible. I don't know how good of a coach he was though.

So far Mike Holmgren and Jim Fassel are the 2 names that most come to mind, since John York wants an exprienced coach.

There's early rumblings about Pete Carrol, but I think that's just early media speculation, it would cost 49'ers at least 4 million a year, probably more...

Erickson is a pretty good offensive guy. Just throwing it out there.

y would holmgrem want to go there, i bet they would only want him because they lost their gm and holmgrem can do both duties
