a team physical

Featured Replies

Does anyone know exactly what is involved when a player takes a 'physical' to join an MLB team? I would imagine it's a lot more involved than what you and I might get at a Dr.'s office, but do they have certain speed, strength, endurance and agility tests they need to pass? Are there MRIs and X Rays involved even if a player is not injured?

For most FA's, they go ahead and have a physical, which is pretty much what you described. MRI's and X-rays of known trouble spots are the norm... I know that last year Vizquel failed his physical w/ Seattle, but that was actually some sort of range of motion type test. This year Wright failed his physical w/ the Yanks because of anomolies in the MRI. For the most part you could always find enough damage in a Major League pitcher's shoulder or elbow to fail a physical(due to the extreme stress from the overhand throwing motion)... Mostly they are used for risk assessment purposes.

I'm guessing its a relatively minor physical. They probably do MRI and take a look at the players past reports and just make sure they are healthy. I'm guessing its rather non-evasive and the big thing occurs with players that have had health issues, mainly pitchers.
