Guest JimH
Today's Sun Times, under the "Notes" column: "Guillen insists he still is deciding whether to start the season with 11 or 12 pitchers, but he seems forced into taking 11. Asked if Iguchi, a former shortstop, could be considered a backup at that position, Guillen indicated he was not prepared to go that route. The utility infield spot is expected to be a battle between Wilson Valdez and non-roster invitee Pablo Ozuna." "Whoever is going to make the team as a utility player has to play shortstop," said Guillen. ********** It's been suggested by many on this site that Iguchi would not be considered a backup option for SS, this appears to confirm that train of thought. SoxFan562004
I think that's a good choice. The transition will be difficult, so let him concentrate on one position. I hope Sox are able to swing a deal for a veteran back-up or maybe a suprise vetran will be cut by another team...

Great signature BTW, looks really sharp. You should send it in to Brooks Boyer and see if they might want to use it for some promo stuff. But seriously, I think Jose would be an ideal back-up IF, but with the pop he has in his bat he's too pricy for that. I don't think the Dodgers are going to be overly thrilled with him at 3b and hitting in that Grand Caynon-esque ball park. Anybod remember what his contract $$$ was? Guest JimH
Anybod remember what his contract $$$ was? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> One year at $3.5M. The ship on Valentin has sailed though, I seriously doubt they'd even consider him. There are too many other good options for a utility player. Ozzie was really turned off by all of his strikeouts last year.

He is a good clutch hitter which clouded my mind a little from all the strikeouts.

I get the sense you're just trolling for an argument, knowing you'll get one with such a far fetched off-the-wall statement like this. When you actually try to, you post some really good things and your knowledge of the game comes through. But stuff like this is just drivel and it ruins the threads. AngelasDaddy0427
Anyhoo to get back on topic I agree it's best to keep Iguchi out of the SS role. I just wish that we could trade Willie soon so we can clear the way for a couple of IF's with some defensive versatility.

I mean Garcia is one of the top players in the game, and had we not traded for him you would be b****ing right now because we missed out on such a top flight pitcher. However because we were able to lock him up then he's suddenly not that good. There is no comparing those two deals. Top Tier starters don't come cheap and we got a great deal on him with the extension.

AddisonStSox
Well, Ozzie also doesn't hint at the possibility of bringing in a vet at this juncture. We may be looking at an addition at the deadline. For now, its Valdez's spot to lose. He's one of Ozzie's boys, but if Ozuna impresses in ST, he's in. Personally, I have no problem with Valdez or Ozuna as the utility IF to start the year. Let's bring one up and see what he can do. Remember, we don't really need offensive production from a utility spot, just consistent defensive and maybe the ability to lay down the bunt. Guest JimH
Can ayone locate minor league fielding/positional stats to see if either Valdez or Ozuna have played 3B? Personally I'd take their chances of being the utility guy more seriously if they can capably play 2B, SS, and 3B. It's a little risky to have your starting SS also be your backup 3B.
