March 18, 200521 yr Since I didn't see a thread anywhere on yesterday's B game, I'd thought I'd post it; Contreras has been shaky this spring, going 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA in 3 Cactus League outings. He was much better in the "B'' game, pitching 5 innings and allowing 1 run on 4 hits to go along with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. Working exclusively out of the stretch for 2 full innings, Contreras still must prove he can perform when runners are on base. He is the White Sox' No. 3 starter until further notice, but Contreras has to start pitching up to his potential. If not, 21-year-old whiz kid Brandon McCarthy is ready to take his job.
March 18, 200521 yr Does anyone know if there is a place to get information on the B games? Is there a stat page or a box score spot for them?
March 18, 200521 yr Author QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) Does anyone know if there is a place to get information on the B games? Is there a stat page or a box score spot for them? I couldn't find them anywhere actually, although I didn't really look too hard besides the usual places (yahoo). In the small game report, in the Daily Herald or Sun - Times, it said Adkins got hit hard, both on the scoreboard and on a comebacker on his hand from Antoin Grey. He's ok though.
March 18, 200521 yr that is what is so frustrating about Contreras. Sometimes he looks really good and some times he looks just ok.
March 18, 200521 yr That the Sox have seen Contreras do something differently while pitching from the stretch, bodes well for Jose getting his act together. If he pitched like s*** when no one was on, and when runners were on base, then I'd be worried. It sounds like the Sox have found something to work on w/ Contreras to help him get out of jams. I'd be interested in seeing what his stats have been w/ runners on and w/o anyone on.

March 18, 200521 yr Contreras' splits: 2004: none on--.239/.309/.440 runners on--.276/.391/.453 2003: none on---.189/.286/.297 runners on--.220/.312/.303 I didn't know how well Conteras pitched in 2003. He had some great, el Duque type numbers. In 71 ip, 52 h, 30 BB's, 72 k's, only 4 hr's allowed, 7-2 with a 3.30 ERA. He also had a 1.71 GB/ FB ratio. When he pitched in NY the first half of 04, the rate was way down near 1.0. If Contreras can get back to inducing GB's, he should help the sox a lot. Maybe he's not so far off than a lot of people think
March 18, 200521 yr Check this out Beck, 2004: Bases Empty: 2.54 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, .239 BA Runners on: 9.98 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, .276 BA I can't recall seeing any other pitchers with stats like that. http://bigleaguers.yahoo.com/mlbpa/players/7043/situational

Yet in 2003 his splits were pretty even. I'm thinking his "problems" aren't nearly as bad as most of us probably think they are.

Of course guys are going to give up more runs with runners on. The solo HR is the only way someone can score with the bases empty. But I will agree that the WHIP and BAA are scary.

I should've listed the HR numbers.
