McCarthy Article and other notes.

Go Sox!

"If that's what they wanted me to do, I would be more than willing," McCarthy said of claiming the 12th spot on the pitching staff. "But if they gave me a choice between the two, I would rather stay as a starter. It would be nice to get my Major League career started, but I love starting and I like the routine. I realize that's where my career will lie."

God no. I don't care, I don't want to see the Sox screw up the development of another pitcher. They did that enough last year with the whole 5th starter fiasco.

The only plus side is I don't think Munoz or Diaz or Rauch have a bright future, especially in regards to starting pitching. The same can't be said for Brandon McCarthy who has a shot to be real special.

Hell, I still think that if Neal was in AAA last year to start the season last years 5th starters spot would of been different. But thats obviously not a big thing, I just Ozzie would stretch him out soon, just so he has that ability if the Sox need a start or two, not a longer string of them.

Let's just hope that if the Sox do decide to bring B-Mac they don't continue with that giving him 2 days rest and pitching him from the bullpen like they did with so many of their failed 5th starters last season. In regards to Rauch, he's missed out on a spot in Washington's rotation although it was always going to be hard for him to beat Zach Day unless his moved for Willy Mo Pena (you can never tell with Jim Bowden these days).

I simply do not understand why the 12th arm continues to surface in discussion. This pen is loaded with experience top to bottom. An experienced pen is suppose to afford you an extra bat on the bench.

Just look at the IP totals:

Shingo (62IP), Marte (74IP), Politte(52IP), Herm(131IP), Vizc(72IP).

Final spot: Cotts(65IP) vs Walker(66IP in 2000, 3IP in 2004)

I'm fine with Cotts in the final spot. Walker would have to far exceed Cotts

in ST to push him out. With that much experience there is no reason to carry a 12th man.

I don't think a 12th pitcher is that critical early in the season is it? McCarthy sure enough looks like the real thing and I would hope Neal Cotts also moves into a future starting role. We could have two excellent young arms starting along with our other top guys. Buerhle, Garcia, McCarthy, Cotts and one of the others.

Garland, El Duque and Contreras need to step up and take charge this year or I can see changes in that pitching staff being inevitable. I wonder if Contreras or Duque end up in the pen?
