kapkomet
You know you live in a metro area in the US, when you have 4 phone #'s and they all have different area codes. 214 - my work cell phone 682 - my home number 817 - my personal cell phone 972 - my office I know Chicago is just as bad, if not worse, but it's silly. Sorry. /Back to bickering.
Be Good
New York City isn't too bad, as far as I know there's only 3 area codes...

Texsox
Actually, we now have 11 digit phone numbers. (1+ for out of area). Any guesses on how long we will have to add some more numbers? Some ideas on reducing the number of phone numbers. Greater portability. Allow someone to keep their same phone number no matter where they move. Why do we have to change if we move over 2 towns, or even two states? That would free up all the numbers that are out of circulation for months in a "cooling off period"

Soxy
It drove me crazy before I had a cell phone. Now I just have everything plugged in and I don't even have to know area codes any more.

CanOfCorn
Ahhhh... Work: 512 Home: 512 Cell: 512 That means I only have to remember 7-digits and let the other 4-digit part of my brain waste away to sweet liquor. PS. Texsox, is that Charlie Chan and number 1 son? I never understood why they had a white Charlie Chan and an Asian son? Or David Carradine in Kung Fu?

Wait. Hmmmm. Or they could do like Japan and Australia did and go to 8 digit local calling. They would have 10 times the numbers per area code. Or another option is instead of assigning new area codes for home phones, actually make the new codes for pagers and cell phones.
LosMediasBlancas
While we're kinda on the subject of telecom, on a related note, here's my pet peeve: Voice mail menus and prompts. Why can't it be that universally, 1 is for save and 2 is for delete? Why is it different for every phone and voicemail system it seems? I don't know about you guys, but 99% of the time I save or delete a message. I try to speed thru messages and delete them quickly, but I can't remember the prompts, cuz they're different on every system. Sometimes, the prompts are the exact opposite from system to system, so I erase valuable messages. Sometimes erase and delete are like choice 7 or 8. Why the eff do I have to sit and listen to 6 other options that I'll never use before the erase and delete options come up? It's like 'for the weather in Uruguay, press 1, for the average weight of a catalytic converter, press 2, for.........' Phew, there I feel better. Iwritecode
This reminds me of that scene in The Last Action Hero where the kid tries to convince Jack Slater that if everyone has a phone number that starts with 555, there can only be 9,999 different phone numbers possible. His reply: "That's why we have area codes!"
