My Illini game experience (long)

Featured Replies

That was one heck of a read. Even as an Aussie, and only been able to watch a couple of college B-Ball games in my time on ESPN, I've found it would just be another experience as a fan / student going to these games (especially now), with all the crowd noise and everything. Have one hell of a time in St. Louis.

What is the biggest thing down there? Rugby, Cricket, or Soccer I would imagine, right? How big of a following is there for basketball and baseball down there?

Down here in my state it would be Aussie Rules Footy without a doubt. I went to a game on Sunday, and there were about 48,000 people there, you get crowds of about 30-40,000 for the average supported teams, and up to 80,000 if 2 well supported teams are playing each other. Luckily, my team is one of the premiership favorites this season, after about 5 years of not much success, so I'll have something to look forward to on that regard. Here's the site of that team actually; Geelong Football Club

Soccer never really got going here, mainly because the national league was really badly run, but they're starting a new competition in August IIRC, and with Australia being accepted into Asia now from Oceania, we'll get more international games down here so it should pick up.

Cricket is the big game in the summer, Australia's easily the best team in the world, and it's gotten a bit boring because they seem to beat every other nation really easy (we just beat New Zealand in about 9 out of 10 matches in a tour there this month).

Rugby would be the wild-card, we have Rugby League down here which isn't that big, but Rugby Union is more popular, we just don't have a team in the state down here, and we actually missed out on one when there was another expansion team.

Basketball is really, really struggling down here. Mid 90's it was really, really big, you'd get prime time coverage on free to air TV, and crowds of about 10,000. Now down here in Melbourne, you're lucky to have more than 3,000 show up, and all of the games are on pay TV now.

The baseball league got shut down in the 90's as well, mainly because not enough people went to the games, so the league wasn't financially viable. They still have a state vs. state thing happening, it just isn't very big, which is a real shame.

Yeah, i saw that earlier, that's solid.

Are any of you in that game tying pic in SIOC this week?

Hm, i haven't seen the picture. We get that magazine tomorrow in our campus newspaper.

Anyway, i'm behind the opposite basket, so i doubt it if it's the game tying pic.

Ah guess not then. It's similar to that picture you were in earlier, but it's a little larger. You can make out everyone's faces; you'll probably recognize people.
