davis injured

Featured Replies

Guillen did not mention catcher Chris Widger, a non-roster invitee who has impressed during Spring Training, or right-handed reliever Felix Diaz. The 24-year-old Diaz was slotted behind McCarthy and Adkins, and with a rare fourth option, should start the season at Charlotte. Widger could make the team, depending on the condition of the torn ligament in Ben Davis' right index finger.

Why would Widger make the team over Burke?

The blurb says that "Widger could make the team" meaning it's between him and Burke if Davis misses the start of the season with his injury.

im not singling you out or anything, im just simply saying that many people on this board and on others are extremely high on jaime burke for reasons i don't understand. hes 33 years old, and he hasnt played major league ball ever essentialy. Yes, he played well in his time in the majors, but the fact of the matter is that he has 0 power, 0 speed. Hes an average defensive catcher who got lucky in his time with teh big league club. Im not saying that widger is that much better of an option than burke, but i think he is a bit more proven and probably will hit better on a consistent basis, and brings more experience to the team.

Is anyone else surprised that Burke is only 4 months younger than Widger? Burke looks pretty young for 33 while Widger looks like an old man at 33.

Widger looks a lot younger with those sunglasses he wears :bang , anyways not that i enjoy players getting injured.. im actually a little happy about Ben Davis because in my opinion he isnt a major league catcher and is just living off his prospect status back when he was drafted like 1st or 2nd.

I'm kind of neutral on Davis. I think either Burke or Widger could do a good job as our backup so I wouldn't mind seeing us trade Davis for a prospect but I doubt we would get much value for him.

I'm positive we wouldn't get much off of him, so that's why I'd just prefere to keep him.

I am not "extremely high" on Burke but I think Burke should get his chance if Davis is hurt over Widger. Widger is more proven than Burke but Widger didn't even play last season, I haven't even mentioned the fact that Burke deserves his chance if a spot opens up.

Wether he was lucky or not last season, he should be the backup for Davis, he earned it, for the organization to bring Widger up instead of Burke would be kind of wrong since Burke has done everything the club has asked him. If Burke doesn't get the job done then give Widger the chance but Burke has earned his spot on this team if Davis gets injured for some time.

There is nothing "kind of wrong" about it. If they feel that Widger is better for the ML roster than Burke, then Widger is who they should go with.

Burke has been optioned to Charlotte so the argument doesnt matter.
