Whatever happened to the good old days when young boys settled issues over fistfights?  I was in a number of fights in my pre-teen days and never even THOUGHT about using a freaking weapon against another kid.

I'm sure that higher divorce rates, excessive materialism, illicit drug use, and a general lack of moral guidance contribue as well. I wonder where California ranks in those categories compared to the other two states.

Yep, and I live around a bunch of them in Indiana. Then again, their kids are committing significantly fewer violent crimes.

Exactly.  To be quite honest, I don't mess with people I don't know.  Maybe it was because I never really wanted my ass kicked or something, but I never picked on people I didn't know.  You just don't know who you are dealing with.  I think it is a valuable lesson to pass on.

 

For me, maybe it's because I grew up in a very s***ty neighbrohood where you expected everyone to be edgy and violent. I've lived in a really nice, safe neighborhood for a long time and it still amazes me the things people say and do to one another without fear of repercussions.......especially while on the road.

It may be good advice to not tease other kids one bit, but if in your experience it's common to see it followed strictly by most hs freshmen and sophomores, then I think y'all went to a pretty unique hs.

s*** when I was a freshman the seniors on the baseball team picked on us all the time.. They would throw baseballs at us and all kinds of s***..

And this was a one-off deal (until I see anything suggesting that this was happening often, I'm inclined to believe the article, that this was just someone having a conniption). It's like sex -- it's great advice to tell kids early in hs not to be interested in sex, but you're delusional if you believe they'll listen. The point is to make sure it doesn't go too far. Same with teasing -- a realistic goal is to stop anyone from constantly insulting another kid, not to make all needling stop entirely.

I think people are overlooking the point SS2k5 is making. The kid snapped because he was getting made fun of. There's a difference between everyday making fun and the constant badgering and namecalling that happens everyday to kids who have few friends and are made as outcasts in school. There's a point where it goes too far. Granted, the black and white of this issue is mostly gray so it's hard to tell. The point I'm trying to make is that the asshole deserved a beating, but he 'just happened' to get killed. As far as I'm concerned both kids went too far.
