Sweeney could be headed to the DL..

"Hopefully, he returns during this road trip. Initially, we thought maybe we'd get him back in Chicago. I don't know if that's going to be the case. I think that's probably being a little overly optimistic."

Team captain has avoided disabled list so far in 2005"

KANSAS CITY -- Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney might be headed for the disabled list on Monday.

Royals manager Buddy Bell hinted as much when asked about that possibility after Sunday's game.

"I don't think we can rule it out but today, as we speak, we're not going to do that," Bell said. "Tomorrow is kind of going to be key just because of the swings he took today."

Sweeney, who suffered a strained left wrist and elbow in a baseline collision last Wednesday night, had a cortisone shot in his wrist on Sunday.

Sweeney said an MRI revealed a ligament tear in the wrist. However, he's had a tear in that area for a couple of years.

"They found a ligament tear in there but they don't know if it's the same one or not," he said.

He's missed the last four games.

"With me being out, I'm hurting myself and hurting the team," he said.

Injured when the Dodgers' Jayson Werth clipped his glove during a play at first base, Sweeney was only in his second game after being out five days because of an oblique injury.

He also missed five games in May because of the rib-cage problem but has not been on the 15-day disabled list yet this season.

Alarms were raised on Sunday when Sweeney took non-contact swings for the first time since his injury.

"The dry swings he took today didn't go too good," Bell said. "Hopefully, he returns during this road trip. Initially, we thought maybe we'd get him back in Chicago. I don't know if that's going to be the case. I think that's probably being a little overly optimistic."

Sweeney has a .299 average with a team-leading nine home runs and 18 doubles. He is tied with Emil Brown for the club high in RBIs with 37.

Wow, is Sweeney headed to the DL? We get all the breaks. He kills us.

Already posted in ATH, so I'm merging it. :)

Now Royals fans have an excuse when we sweep them.

Talk about luck.

Sweeney was killing the ball the last time he was here at the Cell. I'm not going to say that I'm glad that he's hurt, but it's a lot better that he's not playing against us.

So far we have been catching huge breaks with the opposing teams best players.
