ATLANTA -- The Braves announced after their game against the Pirates today that they acquired right-handed reliever Kyle Farnsworth from Detroit, in exchange for right-handed pitchers Zach Miner and Roman Colon.

Since leaving the Cubs and landing in Detroit this year, the hard-throwing Farnsworth has proven he's more than just a thrower and has the capability of being one of the game's top relievers. In 42 2/3 innings this year, he's posted a 2.32 ERA and registered 55 strikeouts.

"We think it is important to strengthen our bullpen and this is certainly a move that does that," said Braves' Executive Vice President and General Manager John Schuerholz. "Kyle gives us a power arm and the experience we were looking for in our bullpen."

While Farnsworth, who graduated from Milton High School in Alpharetta, Ga., a northern Atlanta suburb, has been successful in six of eight save opportunities for the Tigers this year, he's expected to serve as the top setup man for Braves closer Chris Reitsma. He handled that role for both Ugueth Urbina and Troy Percival this year.

Farnsworth, who struggled to realize his promise while with the Cubs from 1999-2002, has limited opponents to a .192 batting average this year. He hasn't allowed a home run since April 14 and seven of the 11 earned runs he's surrendered have come in two of his 46 appearances.

Colon flourished in a starter's role when he was asked to fill a void in the Braves' injury-depleted starting rotation. As a starting pitcher, he was 1-2 with a 3.09 ERA. As a reliever, he was 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA.

He was promoted from Richmond on Saturday, but hasn't appeared in a Major League game since July 17.

Miner, who was the Braves' fourth-round selection in the 2000 draft, was 2-7 with a 4.23 ERA in 17 starts with Richmond this year.

Farns was already having a great year, now he's just gonna be unhittable.

Once LM works with him he will be a dominating closer like he was supposed to be

Glad he's out of the Central.
