Hawks center Collier dies of possible heart attack

Oct. 15, 2005

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Hawks center Jason Collier died Friday night, possibly of cardiac arrest, the team said. He was 28.

Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche said no other details immediately were available and did not say where Collier was when he died.

The 7-foot, 260-pound Collier, a five-year NBA player, spent his first three seasons with Houston before joining Atlanta in 2003. He averaged 5.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in his career.

Collier played for Georgia Tech and was drafted by Milwaukee in the first round, with the 15th pick overall, in the 2000 NBA Draft.

RIP

When a 28 year old man in good physical shape just drops dead, that worries me. Not because he is the same age as me, but because of what might be the cause. The things athletes put into their bodies contribute to this. The lifestyle lived by athletes is not as healthy as it seems. A good example is Daryl Kile. What really concerns me is that these athletes are role models for children.

I will step down from my soap box ...

God bless and Godspeed Jason Collier.

Abnormally tall people often have heart conditions that they don't know about.

I feel sorry for the guy's family and him.

RIP Jason Collier.

As if the Hawks need anything more happening to them. This is terrible. RIP Jason Collier.

These things happen more often than we realize, and it usually isn't because of what was put into their bodies but because of natural causes that are not so obvious. And it has also been noted that abnormally tall people have more problems to worry about.

What magnifies this is that he was a pro athlete.

I wish his friends and family well.

RIP to his family that is left behind.

RIP. Unbelievable.

what types of things do these athletes put in there bodies?

One of my best friends died at 26. Even after the autopsy and toxicology reports, they could not find a cause. He went to sleep normally one night and never woke up. It went down as natural causes. Sometimes the heart skips a beat and never starts back up. He was about 6'5 and not really heavy, but not skinny. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.

It's sad but it does happen.

RIP Jason... Hopefully Eddy sees this as a wakeup call, and goes and gets the test he needs. Being alive is way more important than basketball.

Sounds like what happened to my dentist's son.
