Father-Son White Sox Stories

I love the Sox. So does my Dad. Even though I'm out at school in Washington DC, I've talked to my dad after every White Sox winner during the postseason.

I could never explain how many father-son conversation of mine have been driven by White Sox talk. I can talk with Dad about the Sox for hours. I attribute our close relationship to the White Sox above all else.

Every time I see the end of Field of Dreams when Costner says, "Hey Dad, wanna have a catch?"...I get teary-eyed.

My father and I love each other vicariously through the Sox. Anyone got similar stories?

My Dad ( damn, I miss that dude ) was a diehard Cub fan.

He used to call Comiskey Park "The Boneyard".  :D

It would have been fun to debate this season with him.

:cheers Here's to ya, Dad!!!! I know you're happy for me!!!

My Dad is also a Cubs fan. Needless to say he's more than a little nervous right now. Luckily, my Mom is a Sox fan. Their house is like World War III right now. There was talk of a remote control being shoved in an unclean place the other night....

My Dad has always been a Yankee fan, and up until this year, has always liked the Cubs more than the Sox. Well, once Sammy left town, he started rooting for the Sox and would always call me and say "Sox Fest, Baseball's Best", which I guess was a slogan from the '83 season (I was 3, so I don't know).

He was really into the race between us and STL this year for the best record.

Now he's been wearing around a 1917 style WSox hat and is as big a fan as me, my mom and the rest of my family and friends.

Go Sox!

My father was an ardent Sox fan, in his late 70’s he would plan his day around the baseball game on TV, lying on his couch in the ‘TV room” --the back bedroom in his bungalow. He refused to pay for cable so he was watching a disproportionate amount of Cub games. He began to exhibit Cub like tendencies, rooting for Sammy and actually quoting Steve Stone.

This was a major family crisis –what’s wrong with dad? So his three sons had a meeting, we split the cost and had cable put in his house. A healthy diet of Hawk Harrelson brought him back into the clear light of White Sox fandom.

He never wavered again and when he left us last year he died a practicing White Sox fan. We got him to he park about once a year, the last pitch he saw in this flesh was a Joe Crede walk off against the Tigers.

I am a chic and my dad knows close to nothing about baseball so I will go with Mother-Daughter stories.

My mom has been taking us to games since we each turned 5. I remember walking under the big scoreboard in the old park when it went off, I remember the thoughts and feelings of seeing the field for the first time each time we went. When we watch the game we inevitably have a phone call of some length during the game.

We went to a game on 9/24 and because of my screw up we ended up in the upperdeck. Because my mom smokes, I went down with her so she wouldn't be alone. We were looking at the mural and she was telling me about her favorite players, my grampa's favorite players and the neighborhoods shown. It had been sometime since my mom and I really "connected" like that.

We were on the phone last night for the ninth inning. Calls started flying around between me, my aunts and my mom. My one aunt was crying thinking about my grandparents and their siblings and spouses high-fiving each other in heaven.

My Dad grew up with a brother who was a Cubs fan, so my Dad chose to be a Sox fan when he was a kid.

When I was REAL young I was a Cubs fan, but at some point when I was a kid I started to turn to the Sox. I remember being in Minnesota arguing with my Great Grandfather over who was better, the Twins or the Sox. I had to be about 7 or so, as he was still living in his own house at the time.

I remember watching the games on 44 also, on a B&W TV.

My Dad has fallen on some hard times recently, and he can't even see the games on TV or hear them on the radio, as his TV isn't able to pick up a string enough signal down in Monticello Indiana. So he has been calling me the morning after all of the games to find out how the Sox did the night before. I'm still waiting to hear from him this morning.

My Dad's an odd cat though. He has never been a bad Dad, but he was never an overly emotional/lovey/effectionate parent. But in recent years that has started to change. But for the past 10 years or so, the Sox have always been something we both would talk about. Not at length mind you, but here and there. I'm hoping to get tickets tomorrow, and I am hoping to be able to get an extra one for him to go with me to a game.

Kid, that'd be VERY cool if you get to go to a game with your dad.

The way you descibe him he sounds a lot like my dad who died in '87. My dad was just the same and growing up we rarely even talked. He took me to my first Sox game in '62 when I was 12 (an awesome memory). He was a pharmacist and I worked at his store when I got out of high school. Our shared love for the White Sox (and Bulls) gave us something to talk about. He had a little black 'n white TV set back where he filled prescriptions and if there was a game on we never missed it. Great, great memories. The last time I went to a game with my dad was way back in the Dick Allen era, but I sure remember it well though we still occasionally watched games together on TV right up to his last year.

I've taken my own sons to games and there's nothing quite like it. It's SO special. I watched last nights win with both my boys. When it was all over and whooping and hollering subsided I went outside by myself to have a little "talk" with my Dad.

Sorry for getting all mushy but this is a special time and it's hard not to reflect on all the past years and what has made us Sox fans.

My dad grew up on the South Side, and I was therefore raised as a Sox fan. Ever since I've been able to afford it, he and I have an annual tradition of going to a Sox game on Fathers' Day (or as close to it as possible).

This year was very special. We went on Fathers' Day, the Sunday game versus the Dodgers. We sat down along the left field line, three rows from the field. Pods caught the final out right in front of us (almost in our laps).

There's just something special about our Sox this year. I'm glad my dad and I can share it!

:cheers

My Dad is not a fan of one team I'm a fan of, but I can say, just like you, that sports helped make my relationship with him what it is today. I can talk to him about sports for hr's and hr's at a time and we love giving each other guff over our teams and saying how the other persons team stinks.

I was glad he was sitting next to me in Anaheim when the Sox clinched to go to the series and I just wish he didn't have a prior engagement that he can't break otherwise he'd be there in Chicago as well.

My Dad is a Dodgers fan.....and for the first time ever....he said Congratulations on your Sox...I hope they win it all.

Pretty cool.

Tons of those in Iowa surprisingly. All my dads best friends were Dodger fans and a few were Sox fans. Odd considering you have the contigent of Cubs/Cards/Dodgers more often than not in Iowa. Oh and the twins.

:cheers to you dad.
