This was from the Detroit News in 2000:

Notebook

Garner faces old adversary

Bad blood is nothing new between White Sox and Tigers manager

By Lynn Henning, and Tom Gage / The Detroit News

Phil Garner returned Saturday from his eight-game suspension, probably not surprised that if he were going to get into trouble with an opposing club, it would have been with the Chicago White Sox.

Even before last month's beanball fracas in Chicago, the Tigers manager had a couple of run-ins with the White Sox while he managed the Milwaukee Brewers.

Four years ago he got into a game of dueling headlocks with ex-White Sox manager Terry Bevington after benches emptied one night at County Stadium. It happened when White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillen got his legs tangled with Brewers third baseman Jeff Cirillo after Cirillo sprawled to grab a slightly off-target throw from the outfield.

Words were exchanged, a few of the hottest coming from Doug Mansolino, then the White Sox third-base coach who -- rather amusingly -- later ended up joining Garner's staff in Milwaukee and now coaches third base for the Tigers.

After the dugouts emptied, Garner and Bevington, who were not exactly mutual admirers, tried to twist each other's ears off. They were separated before any serious damage was sustained and the battle, at least temporarily, blew over.

But it wasn't only with Bevington that Garner had been feuding.

In a separate incident at Chicago, Garner challenged White Sox broadcasters Hawk Harrelson and Tom Paciorek to a fight. He had ducked into the clubhouse behind the visitor's dugout during a game in which the White Sox had taken issue with some pitches thrown by then-Milwaukee hurler Cal Eldred.

Garner heard Harrelson and Paciorek say that Garner was clearly ordering Eldred to throw at Chicago's batters.

Afterward, in one of the more memorable verbal tirades in the Garner-Milwaukee annals, Garner left open the manager's office door and let loose with a vocal blast during which he challenged Harrelson and Paciorek to immediate fisticuffs.

Alas, the two announcers had already left for the night.

Post script: Not only was Mansolino hired by Garner two years later ("He's got a lot of spunk -- that fight's one of the reasons why I hired him," Garner said at the time), but Eldred now pitches for the White Sox. Of course, Paciorek is now a backup Tigers television analyst on Fox Sports Net's Tigers telecasts.

In baseball, anyway, there's always the finest of lines between sparring partners and devoted friends.

You mean Hawk has the audacity to look old at the age of 65? How dare he.

I'll kick Phil Garner's ass - don't mess with Hawk! :gosox3:

Sonny, I'm guessing everyone over 40 looks old to you at your age. :D

ChiSoxFan - Thanks for the background from the Detroit News. Funny stuff, esp. the threat to kick their asses - after they'd already left.
