The NCAA's decision on American Indian mascots, issued Aug. 5, bars universities on its list of schools deemed to use hostile imagery from hosting postseason championship events. It requires those schools to remove any offensive nickname or logo from team, cheerleader and band uniforms when participating in postseason tournaments.

all that means is that they won't say "illini" on the broadcast.....that's about it.

This doesn't mean the Chief is gone, which is what some people would think when reading the title of this topic.

The final decision on the Chief is still left to the school's discretion, but I would imagine this is one of the final nails in the Chief's coffin. Not allowing the smaller sports to host postseason events could really hurt recruiting for some of the smaller revenue sports (gymnastics, wrestling, tennis, etc) that have been very successful of late in Champaign.

honestly, this article is fine with me. Out of everything surrounded in this topic, the one thing that I could see people getting offended by is the halftime dance. If that needs to be done away with, so be it. At least we're not changing our nickname, which would have been ridiculous.

That and any logo depicting the Chief and it only affects postseason play. The only other thing affected is that as long as the Chief is still around, the university cannot host postseason athletic events which could really hurt the small revenue sports.

i tend to agree. i've attended a ton of illinois sporting events and i can't say the chief's dance ever really enhanced my experience. if it has to go, i'm cool with that.

I love the Chief dance... even tend to attempt it when I'm drunk (not something anyone wants to see), but the handwriting has been on the wall for awhile now. It's not a question of IF the Chief will go, but when. That being said, everyone knows that there will be a lot of pissed off alumni when this finally occurs. I believe that the university was actually done a service by the NCAA ruling because if the university plays this correctly, they can push the blame for the eventual retirement of the Chief to the NCAA and hopefully minimize the backlash in terms of alumni donations.

My brother hated the Chief when he was at Illinois for undergrad.

He's rather happy right now.

i guess the only saving grace is that he doesn't wear tights, which ratchets down the gay level a few notches. still pretty swishy, tho.

you do realize that the dance is actually from the real indian tribe right?

No its not, it was adapted when it first started from a guy who spent time living with a tribe, but has since been changed. If you have watched that dance and think it resembles anything remotely based on a tribal ritual or dance, I would like you to find the local presence in your area of native americans, make them watch the dance and ask them which part of their ritual it comes from. Because when I was in college, In my graduate sociology course they actually did this, and they pointed out why they think its an embarrassing sight to a real native american.

 

Quick edit, I thought the originator had spent time with a tribe, turns out he just studied Indians during his time in Boy Scouts.
