The suspect drove the victim to an isolated area in Byron Sunday morning after the two attended a party in Walnut Creek Saturday night, Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Monday. The suspect and victim were neighbors in Concord, but didn't know each other well, according to Lee, who wouldn't release the name of the suspect or the victim. After stopping in the 4200 block of Camino Diablo Road around 6 a.m., the victim got out of the vehicle. "The suspect confronts her, proposes marriage to the victim and she refused," Lee said. The suspect then slashed the victim's throat, according to Lee. The woman "played dead" as the suspect stabbed her numerous times, eventually pushing her into a drainage ditch and driving away, Lee said. After getting out of the ditch, the woman went to a nearby home for help. She was taken to a hospital where she is listed in stable condition. Lee said it is still unclear why the suspect, who has not been found, took the victim to Byron. The case is being treated as an attempted murder, Lee said. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the sheriff's Investigations Bureau at (925) 313-2600.
