Good thing IU hired a coach whose last game wasn't an embarrassing loss to a mid-major.

To start:  I like it.

 

As it's been mentioned a couple times now, this is a guy who has been a far above average coach in a power conference, and he's been consistent to boot.

 

It's too early to set my opinion in stone, but as I said:

I think Barnes would be alot better than Sampson, less chance of cheating, and Barnes can really recruit the nation, not just juco's.

Not sure why he'd leave a powerhouse with great facilities that's easy to recruit at in a relatively inferior conference (remember, a Big 12 team hasn't won it all since Kansas in 1988, 8 years before the league turned into the Big 12). I guess he could leave Texas for the ACC, but he's be stupid to do it.

Damn big 12 ,we had like 2 final four teams every year for a 3 year stretch and could not do s***.

 

Barnes will go the ACC, because UT could not care about bball.

I don't see Barnes leaving anytime soon; maybe he goes back to his original post, the great George Mason.

Not sure. I figure all the local news stations in Indiana will have it on. They all had Davis' resignation on.

 

However, I just checked my e-mail and got an invite to check this out in person. Definitely going to be there.

Barnes isn't leaving Texas anytime soon. He doesn't want to have to deal with Duke and Carolina in conference every year. He's got it VERY well in Austin. He doesn't have the admissions standards as he would have in most ACC schools, he can get anyone into UT, example PJ Tucker, Kevin Durant(maybe). He's got top notch facilities, a huge athletic endowment, and basketball is really growing in Texas. Sure, it won't catch football's excitement here anytime soon or Indiana's state love of basketball, but it will have it's fair share of attention.

Greenspan and Herbert stressed that Indiana wants to maintain and build on its tradition of being an elite program, and that involves playing by the rules and graduating student athletes.

 

One of the first questions Sampson was asked was about the problems at OU. He did a good job answering those. He mentioned how the NCAA allowes you to call a player once a week, and they went lax on that and went too far. He acknowledges that they made the mistake. He's glad it happened, because it made them clean and right what they were doing and it won't be happening again.

 

Also, the graduation rate was acknowledged. The NCAA's graduation rate is measured at random times during 6-year periods, and they pick a particular class. If no freshman came in during that class, you would have 0% graduation rate 4 years later.

 

That happened because of their JUCO players etc, and Sampson stressed that it's not necessary to recruit JUCO's at a school like Indiana. He also made note of Indiana's hot bed of high school hoops, and he does not plan on allowing those students to leave the state.

 

"Every coach sees it as a great basketball state with tremendous coaches and players, and we will do our best to keep those players in the state."

Also, it was interesting to hear him personally address DJ in his speech. That's got to be a good sign. However, I'm not confident about Vaden. He didn't even come out and sit with the team. It's not what you want to see, but fall out is/was expected to happen, when a coaching change occurs.

 

Sampson was a very personable, charismatic, and funny guy in his speech. He's going to have no problem making people quickly forget the previous regime. I'm counting the days down until Midnight Madness.

"The violation that we broke was the phone call rule. You’re allowed to call a student-athlete one time per week. And that’s including the whole staff. Each coach doesn’t get a phone call.

 

"That was a mistake that we made. There really is no excuse. An NCAA rule is an NCAA rule. We’ve talked to them about it. I don’t know that as a staff we took that rule seriously enough. I think if you look back at the compliance of our programs over the last 19 years as a major college head coach we’ve never had an issue with NCAA rules, nor will we again.

 

"I think sometimes as an adult when you make a mistake as we made with that, I think it opens your eyes up to everything you do. You take a personal inventory of yourself about how am I performing in other areas.

 

"I told (the Oklahoma athletic director) that in some ways I’m glad that happened. Because not only did we use corrective measures in that, we shored up every area of our compliance office within our office…

 

"When you go through something like that, it makes you take an inventory of what you think’s important and kind of shakes you back to reality a little bit. I made no bones about it. I made a mistake. But we corrected it and we’ll move forward…

 

"It is a little bit embarrassing to stand up here and be asked questions about an NCAA violation. But I also understand that as a human being sometimes we will make a mistake. After this is all over, I’d like to meet someone who has not."

It won't happen. It's simply insurance in case the NCAA finds more stuff or pounds him 3x as hard as is expected.

Thats what I figured. Just wanted to share what I saw.
