August 16, 200619 yr The Cubs beat the Astros 8-6 in 18 innings in Houston tonight. The teams used 18 pitches combined (Cubs 10, Astros 8) and the Cubs actually ended up using all 25 of their players. To make things even more bizarre, Rockies/D'Backs is 1-1 in the 18th at Coors right now. Wonder if there has ever been a day with two 18 innings games before now. August 16, 200619 yr Zona scored in the top of the 18th, but the Rockies have the leadoff man on. 2-1 btm 18.
August 16, 200619 yr Author D'Backs win it, 2-1 in 18 innings, on a Luis Gonzalez RBI single. "Only" 15 pitchers were used in this one.
August 16, 200619 yr Read ESPN this morning, they said according to the Elias Sports Bureau, first time ever there have been 2 18-inning games.
August 16, 200619 yr anyone else think it was VERY irresponsible of Baker to play all 25 players?? One tweeked muscle or ejection and they would have forfit the game!!
August 16, 200619 yr QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 11:33 AM) anyone else think it was VERY irresponsible of Baker to play all 25 players?? One tweeked muscle or ejection and they would have forfit the game!! Not speaking to his specific moves, but no, I don't think anything's wrong with that. You're weighing the probability of an injury against the probability that ph x will get a hit to win the game for you. The latter seems much more likely, so go for it. If it doesn't work, you make do. Always take your shots, don't worry so much about tiny probability disaster scenarios. Jmo.

One tweeked muscle or ejection and they would have forfit the game!! He used all 25, even the other starting pitchers? If thats the case, it was irresponsible.

Yes he did. 10 pitchers pitched and 2 pitch hit (Zambrano and Marmol). All of his position players playyed as well. So, basically, if the game went past the 18th, Rich Hill had the rest of the game unless Dusty started having position players pitch a few inning and move Hill into the field.
August 16, 200619 yr The Astros had so many scoring opportunities in last night's ballgame, it's sad. If the NL wasn't so bad than Houston wouldn't be up there competing for the Wild Card.
August 17, 200619 yr anyone else think it was VERY irresponsible of Baker to play all 25 players?? One tweeked muscle or ejection and they would have forfit the game!! Does it actually say that in the rulebook, or could you play a guy short on the field??
August 17, 200619 yr QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ Aug 16, 2006 -> 08:27 PM) Does it actually say that in the rulebook, or could you play a guy short on the field?? It does, but unless it's a very bad injury, the guy could just stand somewhere on the field. But you do need to be able to field 9 men.
August 17, 200619 yr It does, but unless it's a very bad injury, the guy could just stand somewhere on the field. But you do need to be able to field 9 men. Well it's hard to fault him. It was an 18-inning game. What can you do?? It ain't like the AL where you have the DH. Would you PH for your pitcher when he came up or no?? You're kind of screwed either way if you ask me.
August 17, 200619 yr The astros were really creeping into the wild card race and the central race, then they get swept by the cubs at home.
August 18, 200619 yr QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 01:05 AM) The astros were really creeping into the wild card race and the central race, then they get swept by the cubs at home. With their top three taking the hill: Oswalt, Clemens, and Pettitte.

August 19, 200619 yr Somehow, the Cubs are 7-5 against Cinci, 10-3 against the Cardinals, and 7-8 against the Astros. I think they must be stealing signs
