Star US defender close to Newcastle move

Featured Replies

Hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere, but this is the type of thing that US soccer needs. Gooch is close to a move to Newcastle. The Magpies back line has been decimated by injury this season (much like the entire squad) so if this loan goes through, Gooch should see some solid playing time in one of the most compeitive leagues in the world. Not to mention, out of personal preference, one of my favorite US players moves to my favorite Premiership team, I'm pretty excited.

Now the rest of the national team should follow suit.

Excellent news. This should make him a far more complete and better player and I think he'll be a real asset for us 4 years from now if he plays on the World Cup squad.

A few Americans over there now. Clint Dempsey signed for Fulham, Spector has been playing for my team West Ham, McBride also plays for Fulham, so does Bocanegra and now this move.

Newcastle have been ravaged by injuries at the back this season, so he'll get plenty of playing time initially.

I never understood the Onyewu buzz, but hopefully he does well.

He's tall, strong and athletic. Plays physically, and he's only 24 years old. Hopefully playing against top competition allows him to make the leap that he is capable of making. And he will definitely get playing time for Newcastle given the state of their injuries.

So he's a big deal because of what he can be and not what he is now? That's about right because he's never shown anything more than his physical ability and gifts. In terms of anything specific to soccer he was worthless in the World Cup.

I won't deny that he, like much of the US team, underachieved during the World Cup, most notably against the Czech Republic, but how can you judge him at the age of 22, playing against world class competition for the first time? Give him some seasoning against the best in the world and see what he can become. Writing him off now would be like writing off Brian Anderson after his first 2 months in the majors because he struggled mightily with major league pitching. Dude is 24 years old... give him a chance.

Wait, what? If he was 22 6 months ago, how is he 24 now? How old is he really?

Keep these americans away from arsenal, our young talent is too good for these "americans"

At least Anderson is a very good centerfielder. My point is nothing about what you said of Onyewu was a soccer specific skill. You didn't say 'he's good at 50/50 balls', 'he is a great man marker', or 'he is a great distributer from the back'. You didn't say that because none of those things are true. All you said was he projects to be good at whatever sport he plays because his positive attributes were all physical.

Ill still take Kolo, Clichy, Gallas and Senderos.

In other, more notable soccer news, Ronaldo has completed a transfer to AC Milan from Real Madrid.

Also, Edgar Davids decides to go to Ajax instead of "FC" Dallas. Thank god I don't have to hear about how great the MLS will be.
