June 23, 200322 yr I just completed Moneyball by Michael Lewis. This book explained what Billy did to keep his team competitive with a limited budget. I found the book very interesting and recommend it to anyone that wants something to read over the summer. My favorite part was Beane going over his draft day strategies. Another interesting chapter in the novel is all about former Sox reliever Chad Bradford. CWSOX45
June 23, 200322 yr Author Hopefully KW buys this tome and rips-off Beane's strategies. Billy laughed when Williams took Royce Ring in the first round instead of Joe Blanton. Blanton is one hell of a starting pitcher, but I'm still happy with Royce. CWSOX45

June 23, 200322 yr beane is a f***ing ego maniac, and we can thank him for cotts and olivo, two future all-stars for the sox Assuming of course that Cotts ever gets any control.
June 23, 200322 yr Author beane is a f***ing ego maniac, and we can thank him for cotts and olivo, two future all-stars for the sox Beane could afford to lose Cotts especially after drafting Blanton in the draft, he also has a ton of piching prospects: Harden, Komine, Kohn, Murphy, Blanton, Gonzalez. Cotts and Adkins were to wild and that's why Beane dealt them. As for Olivo, Beane thought that Bradford was worth giving up Olivo for. CWSOX45
June 23, 200322 yr We can also thank him for Jon Adkins and Billy Koch, two royal disasters. The Durham deal was as much abou freeing up room to see if Jiminez was capable of starting this year and freeing up some cash (yes, some of Ray's salary was picked up) as it was about the prospect (Adkins) we received. From a current column on ESPN.com.. "There are three types of prospect deals," Cleveland's Mark Shapiro said. "The first is one in which you take back most of the salary, and in that case you should get one very good prospect and one good one. The second is where you take some of the contract, and there you should expect a good, but not great, prospect. The third is where the team trading for the player has to take all the contract, and in that case you probably won't get even a good prospect. That's the law of the land right now." So it will take awhile for the Mets to make up their minds whether they want to just shed the contracts -- and use the money on other players -- or whether they want to pay a chunk of Benitez's contract and get a prospect. Since right now there is no Robby Alomar market, when and if interim GM Jim Duquette goes to move him at the deadline, the Mets will likely have to take back some of his money to get one or two names off another team's "B" list.
June 23, 200322 yr I'm in the process of reading Moneyball right now. Don't tell me how it ends! The dog dies in the end
June 23, 200322 yr We can also thank him for Jon Adkins and Billy Koch, two royal disasters. Adkins has been pitching up a storm lately. Still not better then two first rounders though. But KW had no way of knowing that draft pick compensation wasn't going to get axed.
