Parental Control Software

So now that kids are out of school my 2 oldest will be home all day for the next three months. Normally we have our computer password protected so that they can't even log onto it without our permission. The Mrs. and I have talked about possibly letting them on for a few hours a day over the summer so they aren't totally "bored".

My question is: What kind of software is available that will allow the computer to be available for a certain # of hours a day? Like between certain hours and then it will automatically lock down again at a specific time?

I've googled it and found a bunch of software but I don't know what's good, reliable, safe, etc...

I notice a lot of the software is stuff that records what is going on the computer and can even take screen shots. Thats good and all but what I really want is to limit accessibility to specific time periods that I can set.

Give them the responsibility to ration their time themselves.

boooh restrictive parents

booooooo unexpected room of evil

hooray beer

If your children are young and you wish to stop some predators from contacting them, then this may be more up your alley. Mike Sullivan of the Naperville Police who is a spokesman for safe kids computing and anti online predators wrote a lot of the dictionary and did a demo of this a few years back at an FBI lead event. It looked promising, I have not tested it but it looks like what you are looking for. One recommendation that I will have is you can add custom keywords. Put your credit card numbers, phone numbers and your address in the keywords that block or alert. This is what predators use to help guide their victims to giving up their location. Also if these are teens, you dont want them using your credit cards anyways. Hopefully this works. If you have other monitoring requirements let me know.

It's not so much restricting access to certain websites or even the internet. I'm finding software that will do that all over the place. It's restricting access to the computer itself. Like I said we have it password-protected now so they can't even log onto windows without our permission.

I'd like to find something that would allow them to log on during set time periods and then give them a warning message that they will automatically be logged off in 10 minutes (or whatever).

It's sad but I think they are actually safer staying inside. Our neighborhood is dotted with sex offenders even though we live 4 blocks from an elementary school.

Just have MSNBC and Chris Hansen live at your house all summer so they can get footage for "To Catch a Predator" I'm sure they wouldn't mind watching the kids.

Sounds like my parents when I was really young.
