The focus in day 2 seems to have shifted to the outfield.

Hopefully more focus will be placed now on IF/1b/C; however as we get further along in the draft it'll be the "BPA".

UNLV: Primed for a strong year after being fully recovered from elbow surgery ... Will be in the mix to join the starting rotation ... A tall left-hander who has the ability to dominate hitters and control games.

 

2006: Bounced back from surgery to make 14 starts and 20 total appearances ... Worked a career-high 77.1 innings, which tied for the most on the team ... Paced the Rebel staff with 60 strikeouts ... Picked up the first win of his college career against The Citadel on March 18, giving up one earned run and striking out six in 7.2 innings of work ... Best start of his career was on April 29 at Utah, when he struck out a career-high eight batters and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits in seven innings to earn the victory ... Finished the season 3-6 ... Was taken in the 30th round with the 912th pick of the MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

what's the deal with all of these rounds? will all of these players make it to chicago's farm system?

 

how likely is it that a team gets an actual MLB talent in the later rounds?

Our 8th round selection Lyndon Estill is fun to watch. Reminds me of Vlad in his style and raw talent, but just isn't there with his output. Not saying he's as good as Vlad was at 21, not even close, but they have a similar style.

The thing is some of the players don't sign and go to college. Lots of MLB players have come from the later rounds. Buehrle was in the in the 20 rounds i think

Mark was actually 38th round, and was one of the draft and follows that are now gone I believe starting this year. I would venture to guess that if you can get 30 of your 50 picks signed, you have done well, and if you can get 15 of those picks to venture into high A and above then you have done well.

you can find diamonds in the rough, buerhle wasnt drafted til the 38th and i think mccarthy went in the 18th round.....

 

a good portion will spend at least some time in rookie ball, some will opt to go to college or stay an extra year, etc.

I think Buerhle was a 38th rounder. Roy Oswalt was picked in the 18th round. So there is talent to be found later in the draft.

Rookie and A ball, they usually don't start higher than that.

They are assigned to where the whitesox think they need to be. You will see most of the highschool guys start off in the rookie leagues Bristol/Great Falls. For the college guys most of them well be in lowA Kannapolis or HighA Winston Salem. Some college guys might start off in the rookie leagues only to be promoted quickly.

From some articles I've read on Griffith, I would expect to sign him away from Florida International. But it will probably cost around supplemental 1st round pick money, which is probably going to be doable with Poreda being one of the easier signs most likely of the 1st round.
