Wheel-Chair Bound Man Gets an Unwanted Lift from Semi-Truck

8-Jun-2007

Written by: Jess Boettger

21-year-old propelled along a highway for several miles before police catch up.

A 21-year-old man from Kalamazoo, Michigan, got an unexpected lift when his wheelchair snagged on a passing semi, obliging Ben Carpenter to tag along for several miles at speeds of up to 50 mph. Well, tag along in the sense that his wheelchair was caught in the truck’s grill, propelling Carpenter along for some miles down the highway.

Carpenter had been attempting to cross a street in the town of Paw Paw, 140 miles south of Detroit, when the light turned green for the semi and the handles of Carpenter’s electric wheelchair lodged solidly in the semi’s grill. 911 calls were made as the buckled-in man went on the ride of his life.

Carpenter, who suffers from muscular dystrophy, was uncertain of his odds of pulling through. He assumed the semi wouldn’t be stopping for quite a time. Luckily for him, two undercover cops happened to be nearby and witnessed the bizarre scene. They pulled the trucker over, who was suitably shocked to see what he’d caught on his grill. Remarkably, even Carpenter’s chair wasn’t in too bad of shape, having simply lost most of the rubber on the wheels.

I saw this on Cnn.com the other day. I cant imagine being on the highway and seeing this roar past you. On one hand im sure that some sick part of me would start laughing, but on the other hand one good bump and you would think that wheelchair could dislodge and pull that man under the wheels.

its amazing that he survived, thats for sure

Picture the wheelchair as it crosses in front of the truck. The truck's grill is facing the side of the chair. The handles of the chair, are behind the chair. How did they become lodged in the grill from that angle?

I was watching the news report of this via a cell phone yesterday. Pretty wild.
