Actually, I was optimistic for them prior to 2005, as I loved the AJP and Iguchi signings. Going into last year, I thought they were going to be very good as well. This year....I just didn't think they did enough to improve.

Cust had a label put on him by baseball and he's clearly shown it to be wrong. He is a very good, productive player at the ML level, and it's shrewd moves like that that differentiate between good GMs and bad ones.

 

When we were dying for outfield help, why didn't we bring him in? What would it have hurt? A terrible prospect and that's all? Why not?

 

Billy Beane isn't a favorite of mine, but he good.

 

I graduated high school with Jack, . He has tremendous talent, and I've never understood why he had not gotten more of a chance in the majors. He is a class guy, with a good sense of humor, and was very modest as well. As far back as freshman year I used to say to him that one day I'd be watching him on tv in the major leagues, and he'd always laugh and say "Nah." I'm glad to finally see him make it, he's worked hard for it.

The only hope for next year is if the long ball returns (we need lively balls) because you said it all, we have no speed.

Crede will be back and Fields will be in the outfield going with all those other slow baserunners you mentioned.

 

It's home run or bust for this team offensively.

 

I hope baseball goes back to the live ball next year.

 

p.s.This might be the easiest win of Schilling's career tonight.
