December 12, 200718 yr Ok, it's clear the offseason strategy has fallen through. It's too late to make any desperate moves and try to force a square peg into a round hole with some overpaid CF piece of garbage. I say we spend more $ on pitching, after all, isn't it that pitching and D wins championships? People fail to remember that our offense in 2005 was not any more potent as this offense is, even now with no CF (and maybe even LF to speak of). We don't necessarily need a Torii Hunter to win in the central. We need more pitching, better D, better baserunning, more speed and the bullpen to pitch like they are capable of. Here we go...ready??? I say we go with BA in CF this year. Screw it- I know Ozzie doesn't like him but tell him to deal with it. If he's healthy- he can probably hit .270 with 12 HR and 50 RBI and play GREAT D. I really do believe he can do it. He hit .257 in the second half of his rookie year so don't tell me this is a stretch for a full year for a more mature, talented player. He does have talent...anyone who says he doesn't is flat out missing the boat. In the end, we'd probably get those type of numbers from an Aaron Rowand anyway for $12 more million a year. I am not confident about our starting 5- it's a reach to say the least that we think our 3,4,5 are all going to have good years. A big reach. So, in my opinion, if we go down in flames next year it's not because we didn't get a CF in the FA market. With good starting pitching and bullpen this lineup can win- yes, even with our tough division. I am not saying we're going to compete next year. However, I am saying that getting a CF'er (ANY CF'er) would not change a thing about our chances this year. Let's hope these 2008 White Sox are like the 1990 White Sox and surprise everyone... Let the flaming begin...
December 12, 200718 yr I love his defense and I like the kid's arm, i just don't think he has a serious enough approach at the plate (like Sweeney, Quentin, and Fields do) to actually "make it."
December 12, 200718 yr An owens/anderson platoon would be fine with me. I would love watching these sox, even if they lost 90 games, to see them progress. I bet they would shock a lot of people and be in the wild card mix.
December 12, 200718 yr QUOTE(JohnCangelosi @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:00 PM) Let the flaming begin... My money is that Anderson is out of the Sox organization by the end of Spring Training if not sooner. Right now the Sox CF is Jerry Owens. The only way the Sox sit Owens, or move him to LF is if they acquire Pierre or Crisp.

December 12, 200718 yr QUOTE(DonnyDevito @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:08 PM) pass me some of that danks! i don't think the sox have the pitching to compete with the Indians, Yankees, ect. for the Wild Card as the Tigers, Red Sox, and Angels will win their respected divisions. The Indians??? Outside of CC and Carmona, who are you afraid of in their rotation? Westbrook? Paul Byrd? Cliff Lee (who got demoted to AAA this year)? Jeremy Sowers (ditto - and throws a fastball that couldn't break glass)? Their bullpen was crap in 2006... as bad as ours in '07. But they added Roberto Hernandez (beeep) and Joe Borowski... and a couple of guys had career years... and THAT is what we're supposed to be afraid of? Please. I think their pitching will return to Earth next year.
December 12, 200718 yr I fully expect that japanese closer the indians added to be their best reliever. They boosts their BP big time.
December 12, 200718 yr QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:42 PM) The Indians getting that closer only helps them to compete with the Sox.....

I really do not think Brian Anderson is a MLB ready player, but who cares. might as well roll the dice. who else we going to get? All the free agent center fielders are signed. you never know, this could be his breakout season and if he sucks, as usual, meh.
December 12, 200718 yr QUOTE(max power @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:41 AM) I fully expect that japanese closer the indians added to be their best reliever. They boosts their BP big time. Yeah he'll be pretty good for an initial season or 2 at least. And he'll put up better numbers than Linebrink will as well over those couple of years, all for a cheaper price.
December 13, 200718 yr Right but he wants to be a closer, so I doubt he would have signed here. Even at linebrink's price. Edited December 13, 200718 yr by max power
December 13, 200718 yr I've been saying that we need to platoon Owens and Anderson since the free agency period began, all the others out there have been ridiculously overpaid, I think that JO/BA can give us around league average batting and good defense. JO gives us some speed and solid D, BA gives us great D a little speed and a little power. We could do worse, like trading Gio or any other talented minor leaguer for coco crisp who would give us guess what? League average batting, a little speed, and good defense
December 13, 200718 yr In our present situation I have no problem throwing open CF to Anderson, Sweeney, or Owens... Who ever can win the job is fine with me. Use the extra money to put into improving somewhere else.
