Racial History of Chicago White Sox

Featured Replies

I am writing a research paper on the history of race in the white sox franchise, comparing it to the larger trends of baseball and the United States as a whole. If anyone has any information, or knows of good research tools to help me find stuff like: first black player, first hispanic player, fan reactions, player experiences, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

IIRC they actually signed the second African American player in the AL, and were the first organization to have a minority both as a manager and general manager at the sametime.

They had Larry Doby as their manager in 1978.

Ozzie is the first Venezuelan manager in the league. Not sure about the rest.

According to emailers, Ozzie plays Latino's only. That's affirmative action right there, haha.

Aren't they the majority though? That would make it discrimination.

The Sox have 16 Caucasians, 8 Latinos, and 1 African. So it probably depends whether you want to count all of baseball, or even go broader and count the country in regards of affirmative action.

The Sox actually had a chance to sign Jackie Robinson several years before the Dodgers did, but passed on the opportunity.

Hilarious how the mike north types complained that Alexei was playing over Brian Anderson, when in truth they both should have been sitting in favor of the equal-opportunity-named "Carlos Quentin."
