Late Night Shake-Up

Featured Replies

For those of you who may have missed it, NBC announced Monday that Jimmy Fallon has signed on to replace Conan O’Brien when O’Brien takes over for Leno on the Tonight Show.

An NBC Goodbye for Leno After ‘Tonight’?

After a news conference on Monday introducing Jimmy Fallon as the next host of the 12:35 a.m. “Late Night” series, Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, acknowledged that the changing late-night landscape at the network would probably mean that Jay Leno would leave it.

Asked about the prospect that NBC would be able to keep Mr. Leno after his contract expires in January 2010, with Conan O’Brien having taken over his spot on the “Tonight” show, Mr. Silverman said NBC was going to do everything it could to find something that would induce Mr. Leno to stay but that it was unlikely that it would succeed. “I think it’s a reach,” Mr. Silverman said.

I just don't get this late night show-jumping stuff. It's the same thing as back when Letterman and Leno were both vying for the Tonight Show gig after Johnny's departure. I know Letterman and NBC had other issues, but even with the presumed prestige of taking up the mantle from Johnny I never understood why he would have wanted to abandon the show that he made in his mold. Same thing now, Cnan is either going to have to shoehorn himself into a Leno-type mold or else he'll break the mold and do his own thing and then he's leaving his own show just to recreate it.

I know the Tonight show contract is worth more money. And I realize that moving up an hour in the time slot means larger total viewership, but that move also will cost some core viewers who's schedule or habits won't let them tune in for an earlier show. it makes sense that NBC is going to want it's best draw to help the Tonight Show, and with jay gone that would put Conan next in line. But it still just all seems pretty stupid to be.

Maybe it's just me (but i doubt it) but i think Fallon is going to SUCK big-time.

I tend to disagree. I think he is in the O'Brien mold. Goofy, but funny.

Guess I'll stop watching Conan once this happens.

Maybe, if he could just stop laughing at his own jokes.

Jay Leno can't retire soon enough

i totally agree.

Jimmy Fallon sucks, so his show will definitely suck.

Pretty much everyone I have talked to about this thinks Jimmy Fallon is good for this. I think his show is going to be awful.

O'Brien wasnt very good at first. but now I like him way more than Leno.

Fallon is probably one of the least funny people on SNL in the past decade. I'd rather have friggin Darryl Hammond up there than him.

His show wasn't great but I just think that he is a much funnier person than Fallon.

I love Letterman and will always watch him, but then usually watch Conan. I just hope with Conan being on the the first show, he doesn't tame down his craziness because that's what make him Conan.

I agree. I dont want him to become Leno. Hos goofiness is what makes him the best.

What's absolutely awesome in all of this is that they showed the Family Guy episode tonight where Jimmy Fallon gets the s*** beat out of him by Peter. Amazing.

The Walker Texas Ranger Lever was the single greatest idea on Conan and in TV history.

I'd have to go with the staring contests with Andy.

I still remember staying up almost every Friday, then almost every day during the summer, in 7th and 8th grade about 12 years ago to watch Conan...

As long as Conan and his show (they better keep Max and the 7) stay virtually the same, except is aired one hour earlier, I have no problem with him taking over for Leno... but I know past 11:30 cst, I won't be watching nbc. Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daily = garbage.

Here's the rub...Conan is funny on his own, as seen by his stints on SNL (The Penis Sketch) and teh Simpsons, which most people would say is the Golden Age of the Simpsons.

Fallon...to put it simply...is the village idiot.

I'm willing to give Jimmy Fallon some time before I will call him names and ridicule him. He has plenty of time to prep.

So will Fallon manage to give an interview without staring directly into the camera giggling like an idiot? Perhaps he could wear a fake mustache and midway through the show it could begin to falloff then he could stare into the camera and begin giggling because poorly applied fake mustaches are f***ing hillarious. Or maybe Hiracio Sanz could be his co-host and they could do little skits where they break character 5 seconds in and start giggling because their fake mustaches are falling off and they're a couple of no-talent hacks.

I thought this was a joke when I first heard it. But this is real?

HUGE understatement. He was godawful. I think he's even said as much in some bits.

Which is why I'll wait and see on Fallon. I can't imagine how it could work, but the same was true of Conan, and damned if he didn't come through in a big way.

I see this as a Chevy Chase Show scenario. Fallon better have some AWESOME writers or else he is absolutely doomed. Conan could write his own show with one pen tied behind his back and an eye dangling out his socket and be funny.

Conan has always been funny, he was just awkward because he wasn't in front of the camera. Fallon, I don't know how much he has written, but he sure is good at mugging for the camera.
