Rookie Question

So lets say we sign Beckham, Danks, Morel all pretty soon. When is the earliest they can start in our minors? Do they have to wait until next year, or could, say, Beckham be placed in Great Falls or W-S or wherever next month?

They could start as soon as their signed, however, some like Beckham still have college ball to still play.

The rookie leagues play a 'short season' particularly for this reason. They start after most players finish up their college or high school seasons.

Alot of our draftees will be playing on those teams (Bristol and Great Falls) as soon as the leagues start up. The majority of the contracts will be no brainers and happen quickly.

The only players I see getting held up from playing within the next month are Beckham and Danks... because their contract negotiations may take longer.

Edited by scenario

Gordon, Morel, O'Niel, Danks and maybe Hudson and/or Dubler will all likely start right away in Kanny or Winson-Salem, IMO due to the fact their game is more refined then most of the rest. Hudson as well as most of the pitchers we drafted (out of college) will probably start out in rookie ball as I have noticed we like to start our pitchers out in rookie ball and see how they do from there. If they do good, they might get promoted. Dubler will probably start out in Great Falls due to the fact these teams need a catcher.

And it's not unusual for players to go to the rookie leagues as "orientation" and then get moved to another level quickly.

I was watching the Georgia game today and the announcer said Beckham was going to play in the minors as soon as Georgia is done with there season.

He will report to minor league camp as soon as Georgia's season is done and the Sox sign him. The Sox have yet to sign him and while I'm sure they've had initial conversations there could be a bit of a process until he signs. He has until August 15th to sign (otherwise he goes back to Georgia and re-enters the draft next year) and he'll likely report to Kanny or Winston Salem within a couple days of signing.

When does the season end for Georgia? Isn't the college world series the end of the season?

Yes, whenever Georgia exits the CWS, Beckham will probably get a week or so off and then head into minor league ball.

It might be a while if Beckham keeps hitting like this. (2 hrs today)

You don't get much higher than 8th overall...so yeah, Gordon's signing with the Sox almost assuredly.
