Anyone ever play baseball games with their baseball cards and a pair of dice when they were kids? Pick your players for your teams, set your lineups, and roll the dice to decide the outcome of the game. Certain rolls counting as singles, doubles, homeruns, etc. Anyways it's a game my dad and his brothers used to play as kids and he taught my brother and I how to play and this weekend I taught my nephew how to play.

 

The reason I ask is because I'm trying to tweak the old system that we used to have. I just now realize that there is nothing that counts as a sacrafice fly or a double play and was wondering if anyone had any kind of rules that they go by. Here are the rules that we have always had...

 

1-6 = Base on Error

2-2 = Double

2-3 = Single, Baserunners Advance 1 Base

2-5 = Single, Baserunners Advance 2 Bases

3-3 = Triple

4-5 = Base on Balls

6-6 = Home Run

 

Everything else is an out.

 

Also, if you wanted to steal a base you announce it before you roll and if the dice rolled add up to less than 7 you are safe, 7 or more and you are out.

 

I'm thinking of making 1-1 a double play. And 4-6 and 5-6 sacrafice flies if the baserunners are on 2nd or 3rd. Also thinking of adding a rule that if you roll a 3-3 you must roll one die and if it is a 1,2, or 3 it's a bases clearing double and only if it's a 4,5, or 6 is it a triple.

 

This game was lots of fun as a kid but I now realize that it's not very realistic. My dad claims they used to have certain rules for things like sac flies but he forgets them. Anyways...anybody have any thoughts on how to improve the game or even know what I'm talking about?

I played dice baseball as a kid but have no clue what all the combinations were. We used some for groundouts, flyouts, K's, as well as all the base hits. A flyout with a runner on third and less than two outs was an automatic sac fly. Some rolls were a simple ball, which allowed for walks on occasion.

 

Nope, but we did play Stratomatic Baseball.

I tried Stratomatic, but preferred APBA.

I really like strat o matic. I went crazy last year and bought a bunch of card sets and other teams. I mainly wanted the 2000 and 2005 White Sox, but also the 93,94, and 1990 white sox teams. I played a lot with one of my friends, but then life started to get in the way.

My dad and i always used to play strat football, the avalon hill war games, and sports illustrated football. I remember him getting mad at me when i was like 7 years old because i found a walter payton run he could not stop and would mix it in just for first downs. I think the least amount of yards that could be gotten was like 4. He could not belive he got beat by me finding a loophole in the game at such a young age!

Nope, but we did play Stratomatic Baseball.

 

Absolutely loved Strat-O-Matic Baseball as a kid growing up.

I used to collect MLB Showdown cards. Those were awesome when I was a youngin'. It used 20 sided dice those, and the system worked very well.

Looks like I may have to look into this stratomatic that everybody's talking about. Never played it before.

I played this game called Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball on this thing you plug into your TV called a Nintendo 64.

What is the point of picking cards and players? It might make it a little more complex, but, if you pick cards and take somebody like Manny Ramirez, he should have a greater chance to hit a homer or a double than if you picked Chone Figgins. And as well, Chone Figgins should have a greater chance of swiping a base than Manny. I'm just thinking of myself sitting there with Figgins hitting all the HR's and Manny stealing all the bags thinking, "What the hell?"

After they changed to the new system, i gave up and went back to Strat o Matic

Yeah, after the first two series, when the made the changes, I quit on it as well. I have an insane amount of them though.

That made me so mad when they switched, my team was all 10's in the hitting end, i even used my math degree to come up with a spreadsheet that would give the breakdown of who to play against a particular pitcher, it gave me the odds of hitting a home run against a guy and all that crap. I lost the spreadsheet when my computer crashed at work and was so mad i never tried to redo it. All i had to eneter were the card values from the pitcher and hitter and it would give me all the values. It felt good to use something i learned about in school!
