Seattle Mariners Fire John McLaren

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners have fired manager John McLaren, replacing him with bench coach Jim Riggleman.

That follows the firing of Mariners GM Bill Bavasi on Monday.

In 156 games over two seasons the McLaren as manager, the Mariners were 68-88. Entering Thursday, Seattle, which many observers thought had the talent to compete for the American League West, were last in the division with a 25-47 record -- 17½ games back in a four-team division.

A frustrated McLaren unleashed a profanity-laced tirade on his team's poor play on June 4, but that didn't get the Mariners back on track. They're 4-12 in June and have lost nine of their last 10 games at home.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Wow this is going to be a complete make over of the organization.

I was starting to think that they won't trade Bedard, seeing they just traded for him, but I'm starting to think they may.

Complete makeover. I remember when Riggleman was the manager of the Cubbies.

They're going to release Sexson soon also.

If they want to rebuild, trading Bedard is probably the best way to go, the Yanks would love to have him. They'd probably like to have Adam Jones back right now, but that's the way it goes.

Bavasi was putting all of his eggs into the 1 basket trying to win the division, and it's blown up in his face big - time, and him and McLaren have taken the blame.

They should just get rid of Vidro and get Balentien into the lineup everyday also, at least as a DH. Jeremy Reed's also been decent in CF the times he has played, might as well give him an extended look for the rest of the season.

If I'm not mistaken, a former Cubs manager had never got another job until Baker got the Reds job, now there are two with Riggleman.

I wonder if they could pry Hughes from NYY...

Probably not.
