Norfolk @ Charlotte

Charlotte lost 6-1.

Whisler was decent... MacDougal was his imploding self in one inning of relief.

David Cook went 2-4 in one of the few positive notes on this game.

Birmingham @ Mississippi

Dewon Day pitching

Day was bad.

And the Barons got dominated 6-0.

The Mississippi pitcher threw a complete game no-hitter... 14 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Helena @ Great Falls

Cody Allen pitching

Kingsport @ Bristol

Off Day

Winston-Salem

All Star Break

Miranda 1-for-3, his avg now up to .298. OBP is above .375. He looks back to form again, after a horrible start at W-S.

But, why is he at DH so much lately?

They just brought up Eduardo Escobar from Great Falls. Escobar has played SS the last 3 games and they wanted to keep Miranda's bat in the lineup.

Interesting. I doubt they expect to keep Miranda and Escobar both there for long - they are both considered future SS's. One will be moved soon.

Miranda seems ready to go back to W-S, but, Paiml is doing quite well there. The only place in the system with a SS hole, maybe, is B-Ham with Valido. Plus Silverio is starting off so hot. Should be interesting to see what happens to the SS stack as the season goes on.

They may as well make Valido a minor league utility guy because he has no shot at making it in the majors. I know Ozzie likes him but the dude just can't hit period. Paiml isn't exactly setting the world on fire either.

Escobar has gone hitless in his three games at Kanny so far. So who knows? It could be that after his hot start in Great Falls that they wanted to see how he looked against A-ball pitching. Maybe he ends up going back to GF.

I think it would be an interesting experiment to send Miranda up to Birmingham for a week or two, sort of like they did with Persichina earlier in the year.

I know Miranda struggled at W-S but maybe it was timing and mechanical things rather than the pitching. Why not take advantage of him being hot now and see what happens? If it works out and he does well, it could be a nice boost for his confidence. He might even have a chance to stick with the Barons if that happens.

Like wite suggests... what do we risk? Holding Valido back?

I'd really like to see Paiml play every day though. He was scorching hot toward the end of last year... just killing the ball.

And since he's moved up two levels this year, it's probably not a surprise he's struggling a little.

It'll be interesting to see how he does later in the year as he adjusts to this level.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Check out Paiml's month-by-month progression at Great Falls last year:

- June batted .150

- July batted .267

- August... .366

- September... a .727 average (8 hits in 11 at-bats)

Ended up finishing the season with a .310 average.

So, if we're going to have Miranda bump somebody above him, I'd rather have him bump Valido.

Edited by scenario

agree 100% with him bumping Valido...one thing I hadn't thought of though is that they may just be saving SS in W-S for Beckham. You'd think that once he's signed, which could be shortly after the CWS is over, he'll head there rather than Kanny, because there's no way a hitter of his caliber is going to start in a rookie league. And then by next year, he'll be ready to be the SS for the Barons, if everything goes according to plan.

Good point. On the other hand, it's hard to predict the timing of him signing, etc. I'm not sure it would affect the current moves. Whenever he does sign and report, they'll probably just move guys to create an opening for him.

BTW - there's a nice article on whitesox.com today about Beckham (I think it's called 'Beckham doesn't bend'). Pretty interesting. According to the article, GB has called several of his homerun shots this year. Ballsy for a college player... but I like it.

My marginally-educated prediction for whem Beckham signs...

--Beckham lands in Kanny.

--Escobar goes back to GF.

--Miranda goes to W-S.

--Valido is benched or released.

--Paiml goes to B-Ham.

So that, plus Silverio in Bristol, give you your SS stack for the system (Charlotte being a non-factor in terms of the prospects in this case. From the bottom up... Silverio-Escobar-Beckham-Miranda-Paiml. Then in 2009, its all up for grabs.

You have to like that list of names, one way or another. That's 4 or 5 legitimate SS prospects there. Miranda is marginal, and so is Paiml, but both have shown success. The other three look like serious talents.

Beckham, when signed, will definitely be my new favorite minor league player, just ahead of probably David Cook. Josh Fields is on there somewhere too, but whatever. He's just got such a good combination of athleticism and baseball tools that I just drool watching him play every time Georgia takes the field. Whether he ends up at SS, 3B, 2B, or even LF, I don't care, because he appears to have the bat to handle any position on the field.

It's also good having a glut of SS's like this...they almost always have atleast a bit of value, unless they hit like f'ing Valido.

I think his name has now legally been changed to F'ing Valido.

I'm no Valido fan, but I've seen significant improvement from him this year. Plus, he's just barely 23, so I think he deserves the rest of the year at B'ham. After this year, I don't know. I guess let him have a shot at Charlotte in 2009. In regards to Beckham, I see him going to Great Falls when he signs, then W-S to start 2009. Paiml will probably start out in B'ham in 2009, he's a native of B'ham and former Barons batboy. There's no telling though, with Silverio, Escobar & Miranda in the mix as well. My guess is that Beckham will be on the fast track to Chicago. He still needs to add weight.

His defense this year has been a bigger liability than his bat, 17 errors, mostly throwing. Also trying to be cute backhanding balls and letting them through. I don't think he has the arm for shortstop anymore. He is a holy terror on the basepaths though. If he's back in the system next year, I see him either playing second for B'ham or shortstop for Charlotte.

The annual tradition of him being demoted back to W-S hasn't occurred yet. But, it's usually about this time of year.

I doubt that happens again, with this group of shortstops in the wings. I think for him, its either the bench, or a release.

ETA: I would add, I suppose its possible they promote him to Charlotte this year, as a sort of perform-or-be-gone type move, and to clear room.

If Valido continues to hit at his current level...

This will be the 3rd consecutive year he finishes the season with an OBP under .300... and OPS under .600.

Like I said, this season he's improved with the bat. Sad, huh?

Yep. When I look into the crystal ball, I see insurance sales in his future.

There are smart ballplayers, ballplayers with skill and those with both. Valido's not one of the smart ones. A Florida beach bum is in his future if baseball doesn't pan out.

It's 2 games, 0-9. This must be some sort of preparation for Beckham with Escobar to see where they can put some of these SS when Beckham signs.

My friend just no hit the Barons!!!! I know that sounds bad but friends b4 minor league sox lol

Are you good friends with him? Or you just know who he is?

And Silverio went 2-4 with an RBI for Bristols 5-4 win. But he had 2 Errors in the field, giving him 4 already on the season. Not a good sign, but he will learn.

eeehhhh, yeah, 14 K's, 3 BB, no hits. A night to forget for the Barons, I'm just glad it wasn't a home game for them. That's what happens when you take 50 Schnur out of the lineup.

Great Falls somehow managed 12 runs with just 4 RBI
