Are the White Sox "The Pretender"?

Featured Replies

I find it funny that CSN would decide to use the Foo Fighters song, "The Pretender", surrounding the Sox game. Love the song, but think before you play something like that.

Although, after tonight, it's kinda fitting.

thats funny...

They probably have a Cubs fan picking the music and no one picked up on it or they all agreed it was appropriate.

If that was a dig, it's ridiculous. Not too many "pretenders" sit in 1st place for 100 days....even if they eventually blow it.

We cant be called pretenders based on what's going on right now. We're a little too banged up to be judged completely.

When healthy we're the most talented of the division's top two teams. And the Tigers, while more talented, seem to have a case of whatever 06 white sox had.

I was under the impression that there's more than one Pretender, and that Chrissie Hynde is one of them.

I hope we're the real deal but there are some serious questions surrounding this team right now

Sorry but I'm surprised we made it this far.

Yeah, Detroit started awful but it's not how you start...

All it takes is Detroit to go on a tear in August and Minnesota to keep chewing away and we'll be in the rearview mirror soon enough.

When two highly-paid sluggers (Konerko and Swisher) are hitting around the Mendoza line this late in the season, you're in trouble.

yeah serious questions...they've lost 3 f***ing games

people need to step away from the f***ing ledge and realize that this team is not playing well right now...that's pretty much it

just curious, are the red sox a pretender? they've now lost first place back to the Rays

i think you and I both know the Red Sox are better than the Rays are, and will ultimately win that division, but right now the Red Sox are in second place, BY TWO GAMES

I'm not freaking out with 2 months left to play, i'm sorry. teams have their ups and downs. it happens to every team in baseball, in fact the only team this year that I haven't really seen have any ups/downs are the angels and we're 3-4 against them this year

people need to stop freaking out, and look at all of the other teams in baseball and take a subjective glance at the divisional races.

I think people are starting to skip past my original post which had nothing to do with the Sox actually being pretenders, but more with CSN deciding to use that song for the game.

When then for the Cubs, we can play "100 Years" by Five for Fighting. That's only fitting as well.

ETA until ESPN MLB homepage puts up "Who wins the AL Central" Poll? lol

As soon as they realize that there is an AL Central

I think it's more or less that everyone in the world is out to get the White Sox...ESPN, Tribune Company, Comcast...even their own fans. The White Sox are officially fistf***ed.

Who's freaking out? I'm just being realistic. This team was flawed from the beginning in its construction, unless you think an aging, slugger-loaded team with little speed, two young pitchers and one really old one was going to go thrashing the AL central.

The only surprise has been Dye, who although older and not exactly fast, has been doing a hell of a job hitting .300 and lifting the team up. But how many times have we seen the dreaded Paulie/Thome slump, and now for whatever odd reason Swisher seems to be having a crap--or okay, inconsistent--year at the plate?

I'm not saying it's over, I'm saying I'd be really surprised to not finish third. And if that doesn't turn out to be true, well then: cheers!

wow.

i thought we were still in first.

Yeah a team that's in the top 5 in the league in runs scored and in first place by a game and a half is flawed...but the 2005 team that had one of the worst offenses in the AL wasn't flawed because 2 guys in the starting lineup could bunt and Podsednik could steal bases...that makes sense

It's also hilarious that you mentioned Thome slumping when he's been the team's 3rd best hitter, and that you fail to mention the massive explosion of Carlos Quentin, who should probably win the AL MVP right now.

This team's offense is flawed because it's all or nothing, sure, but it's a good enough offense to win and that just because they don't bunt and have Jerry Owens slapping the ball around they are going to finish in 3rd place. Get real, this team is likely headed to the playoffs and it's because of an explosive but inconsistent offense and a damn good pitching staff.

I can't believe how much praise the Tigers get from some on this site. Detroit's a .500 team, nothing better.

Getting back to the original post, what are some good suggestions for a better song for the White Sox?

I know it's one of many signs I'm getting old, but when I saw this thread I thought of Jackson Browne.
