Olivo

What do you think about sending him down to AAA and bringing up Rivera or Burke. Yes I still think he is the future catcher of the team, and I haven't given up on him, but I think he needs to get his confidence back at the plate and AAA would be the perfect place for him to do that. Because right now with him in a slump we are only batting 8 guys when he is lineup. I say bring up Rivera or Burke and let them back up Sandy while Olivo is getting his confidence back.

So what do you think about this.

Again I still think he will be a good player in the majors, I just think he needs his confidence back.

Not a completely bad idea but his defense has kept us in games at time. I am sure we would lose some defensively because Sandy can only really go twice a week and who is to say the other guys would hit. It is a tough call.

I think the Sox are committed to keeping Olivo as the #1 cathcer. he can field but can't hit that's for sure, but I am afraid we may have to put up with a .200 average for this year and hope he learns how to hit something other than a mediocre fastball

Anyone know how good Rivera's defense is???

I believe Rivera, although I'm not positive, is a defensive catcher with little offense. I may be wrong though.

without looking up any stats, would it be true that Olivo is hitting in the majors just about what he hit in the minors last season?

Nope, not true at all....... He hit roughly .260 last year.

I doubt they'll try to get a catcher tolearn the system with all the pitchers since Olivo is still learning . Every pitcher will want Sandy just because he knows them.

thanks Rex -

I see he is hitting 217 now - I can't see the point with sending him down to get back up to 260, and I can't fathom our defense without him

I think you stick with your young player. He is still contributing.

Rivera has pretty good offensive upside. In all honesty I have no idea how he fell to the Sox.

He has some good tools. He can also play defense.

why in the world would you want to send olivo down....hes doing just fine......if anyone should go it should be paulie.....untill he can hit at .200 he shouldnt even be allowed in the clubhouse........he should be spending all the time he can with his bat in the cages....mho

He is still contributing.

His arm is the only thing still contributing

Olivo was hitting an acceptable (for him) .240 a couple of weeks ago. He's just hit a nasty bad stretch right here. He'll be ok.

Miguel is 0-23 and is down in the two teens now. He needs a few days off to regroup, not a minor league assignment. Like I said about a month ago he isn't quite ready to be the everyday starter, and he started downhill when they started using him that often after the Alomar DL trip. They need to go back to starting Sandy 3 days a week, and Miguel 4 times. They both were playing their best at that point.

Well, you might have figured that out, but God knows Manuel surely won't.

Because he is struggling, and right now when he is in the lineup the opposing pitcher has to only face 8 hitters. Right now all pitchers are doing is giving him a diet of breaking balls knowing that he can't hit those. I don't know if he would be able to improve on this in the minors or not, but right now it is costing us.
