What is McPherson still doing in the minors, and is he obtainable via trade? He can play 1B and 3B in the majors. He's played 116 career games in the majors. Carlos Quentin had played 138 games before he was traded to the White Sox this season. Good sample size? He has to have some value with those numbers and could be a 3B or a 1B who hits for power, and apparently is getting on base decently enough. bighurt4life Posted July 31, 2008 Share Posted July 31, 2008 He was a big time prospect in the Angels system a few years ago but he could never stay healthy, he has had lots of back problems, just like our current 3B. I believe that he got surgery last year and is apparently healthy enough now to play a full season. I was saying that we should take a flyer on him and sign him this past offseason but I think he wanted to go to an organization where he would have the chance to come to the majors if healthy and the sox have crede and fields (not to say that we even offered him a contract) so we were probably out of the running early on Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

He was never healthy at the major league level and he's kind of stuck behind players right now. I don't think people realize just how talented this guy was prior to his injuries (he was easily one of the 10 best prospects in all of baseball at one point and we are talking about a guy with 40-50 HR power). If the Marlins would take a couple of former first round pitching prospects (Broadway and McCulloch) I'd do it in a heartbeat because I think Broadway's ceiling is a no.4/5 guy and we already have enough of those guys while McCulloch isn't very good at all. But I don't know if I'd want to go any higher than that, maybe add in a solid RP prospect. I guess it would all depend on what Kenny's people think of him, if they think he's going to contribute in a huge way at the MLB I'd give up anything in the minors sans Fields, but I agree that he needs a real shot. He's always had monster power. I don't think he's the next Quentin (Quentin is capable of hitting .320/40/160 one of these years), but he could be the next Troy Glaus and that would certainly be a welcome addition for the next few years.
