A Financial Upside to Gay Marriage?

A Financial Upside to Gay Marriage?

Monday December 8, 2008 The U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has estimated that if same-sex marriages were legalized in all 50 states and recognized by the federal government, the federal budget would gain almost $1 billion a year in new revenue.

Based on the responses to Census 2000, CBO estimated that nearly 600,000 same-sex couples nationwide would get married if they had the opportunity, and that those 600,000 newly married couples would pay up to an additional $700 million a year, mainly in income and estate taxes.

Currently, and as long as the Defense of Marriage Act remains in effect, the federal government does not recognize marriages of same-sex couples either for receipt of federal benefits or for tax purposes. Under the law, the federal government honors only marriages between one man and one woman.

CBO notes that considering the total national debt, the impact of $700 million a year "would be small," and that its estimate of the number of same-sex marriages is "highly uncertain."

In almost-broke California, where voters just overrode the state’s supreme court by re-outlawing same-sex marriage, a University of California study estimated that gay weddings would generate $64 million in additional state tax revenue and create some 2,200 new jobs.

But then I'd have to divorce my wife because my marriage would have no meaning. That has to be bad for the country.

yea but it could be a big boost to the divorce lawyer industry if everyone gets divorced because of gay marriage.

throw in legalizing fireworks, gambling (incl sports betting) and prostitution too and tax the sh*t out of them.

It would be a big boost because there would be even more marriages that will need to be ended.

If you think your marriage to your wife would have no meaning because homosexuals were now allowed to marry, then your marriage already has no meaning.

EDIT: That was harsh, but seriously, how does anyone else getting married effect your own marriage?

When you wander in to the political forum, you better be ready to detect sarcasm missing the green color. Your question there is EXACTLY the point I was making.

If suddenly they issued college degrees to everyone, wouldn't it deflate the meaning of a college degree? ;) Now he wouldn't have a marriage to prove he isn't gay.

That's what green is for... I actually thought to myself, "hey, the guy's pretty cool on TalkBulls, maybe he meant it sarcastically". I also know you lean left, but still, I wasn't sure.

I figured attacking the response was the best course of action.
