Saw this word twice in the subtitles of the move "Das Boot." I didn't know what it meant.

It's a form of the Italian word "aprire" which means "to open" or "to turn".

 

I'd say anyone who uses "apriate" in place of "appreciate" either thinks their funny or is very confused.

Maybe they meant aspirate and they were referring to car engines?
