July 16, 200322 yr 4th round draft pick this year... HS pitcher out of Texas who would have been considered a possible first rond pick if not for two terrible knees. He is pitching at Great Falls and has had some success, but a couple of really bad outings as well.
July 16, 200322 yr Rex, why don't the Sox fix the knees? I am not sure of all the details. Perhaps MSF can probably expand on this. My understanding is that it is more of a chronic problem that can't be fixed. MSF, where are you when I need you??

July 16, 200322 yr LDF is correct. It is degenerative condition. They are taking gamble he will be able to play thru it. Good gamble to take.

Good gamble to take. just like britt burns of the 80's. i wonder with the new replacement knees and such, would new knees affect him. in addition i think they, the sox are hoping that it the knees may not get worst.
July 16, 200322 yr Not by the looks of the stat line posted. he is just out of hs. come on, give the kid a break.
July 16, 200322 yr 4th round draft pick this year... Actually he was a 5th round pick, Robert Valido was our 4th round pick. But, wtf.... 4th or 5th round, i guess it really doesnt matter.

MSF, where are you when I need you?? Its a chronic problem and basically he was told a few years ago that he wouldn't be able to pitch. He has kept pitching and the Sox took a chance on him because of all the advances in modern medicine.
July 16, 200322 yr Why would we leave a kid like him in to take such a pounding? 9 hits, 2 walks, 10 runs, 1.2 innings.

Perhaps because their whole pitching staff has been getting pounded other than McCarthy and he is still only going 6 innings. One they probably needed some innings from him because the bullpen was worn out and/or two, they probably wanted to see what he was made of. Sometimes you gotta leave a guy out there and see how he reacts and handles himself.
