Possible Acquisitions for the Sox

Who, if anyone, would you like to see the Sox acquire before now and the trading deadline?

My personal vote is for Sidney Ponson, but I doubt it happens because I don't see the Sox making anymore deals after the Alomar and Everett deals.

The only way Sid comes here is via free agency.

I agree Steff, as much as it pains me to do so. :P

Well signing Ponson would be great, cause he could replace Colon and the Sox could save some money in that area.

Sidney Ponson and if they can a reliever as well.

If we blow things up, Juan Cruz is one guy I really want. I'd also want Ponson anyway and keep him long term.

what has Juan Cruz done now to make you fall in love with him?

The kid has filthy stuff, and had some very good numbers as a starter for the Cubs.

I would take Cruz in a f***ing heartbeat. That kid could be f***ing awesome. A rotation of Loaiza, Buehrle, and Cruz for next year, with Garland and maybe Ponson in the end of the rotation? That's mouthwatering good.

What would it matter with the pathetic offense we're throwing out there everyday?

Juan Cruz is an enigma. When he came up two years ago, I thought he would be tremendous. Big time movement on his fastball. Then in 2002 he had nothing but trouble followed by more trouble this year. The jury is out on him. I think he should be a set up guy for a year or two. He still could be very good, but the market for him has to have gone down.

Excactly, Mr. Fainter.  Stuff ain't everything. I've always believed in the "numbers don't lie" philosophy.

I look at numbers before everything else. Who cares what skills and talent a guy has if he can't put it to good use.

You are correct. However, some guys take longer to put it all together than others.

See Curt Schilling.. See Randy Johnson...

Cruz' upside is tremendous. With guys like him, there are no guarantees the potential will ever be reached. But, if it is, you certainly want the guy on your side.

Maggs AND Koch?  For one thing, Nevin is broken. Who is Phillips?

espn

Jake Peavy: Pitching

Peavy often is compared to Greg Maddux, both in terms of stuff and control. Peavy has a little more length on his fastball, consistently reaching the low 90s. But he hasn't quite honed Maddux' pinpoint control yet. Peavy's slider and changeup are both above average. He has good pitching instincts and enough confidence in his command to throw any of his pitches on any count. His righthanded delivery was much more effective against righthanded batters last year.

He is 8 win 7 losses with a whip of 1.36

espn

Oliver Perez: Pitching

Perez has command of a fastball that touches 94 MPH, as well as a sweeping slider, curve and change. He can throw his fastball and slider for strikes from two different arm anglesan almost sidearm delivery, and a three-quarters release. He has a slight hitch in his motion that he can make longer or shorter to further throw off a hitter's timing. Although Perez is lefthanded, opposing righthanded batters combined for a sub-.200 batting average last season. But interestingly, the southpaw was much less susceptible to the longball versus lefthanded swingers. Perez is incredibly poised on the mound and doesn't appear intimidated by any circumstance.

He is 3 wins and 3 losses

espn

Mark Phillips, LHP: Fanned 156 in 148 innings at Lake Elsinore, using hot fastball and big-breaking curve. Will need better command in Double-A. Went 10-8 with 4.19 ERA.

BA

Strengths: When he maintains his arm slot, Phillips shows two plus-plus pitches at times. His fastball touches 97 mph sits in the low 90s, and farm director Tye Waller describes his curveball as "dropping out of the sky." After arriving out of shape for his first spring training, Phillips now understands the commitment needed to be a professional. He has a clean, effortless arm action

all 3 are reported to be a future #1 starter material.

ref to nevin, they are desperate in moving nevin, why who knows, maybe someone would know. but the thing is mags mention that he wants to play in sd and why not accomdate him. he could be the "player to be name later", or nevin can be a nice replacement for mags. nevin should be back soon.

While I like Peavy and Perez a lot (Namely Peavy) you don't trade a 23 year old ace for guys that could turn into aces. Its so rare for a pitcher to live up to their hype and projections. While I think Peavy can its not worth dealing. The Sox have Buehrle for a fwe more years and I'm sure they can work something out. Afterall the two sides were really close this offseason.

true however, at this point, they can give us 3 great arm to finish off the season.

And then the Sox have to wait another couple years to win. I'm sick of waiting and I'm sick of potential to a point. To me if the Sox move guys it should be to get younger, more talented position players that would give the Sox a different look. I love most of our pitching staff and would like to cut salary to sign a few position players and some power relievers in the offseason as well as acquire some via trade.

these 3 arm will help us a lot this yr, esp if we make it to the playoff. they will fill voids except for the reliever position.

The numbers don't lie? If I remember correctly, how about his like 3.30 ERA in his first 10 starts of 2002?

If you want a good example of a guy that put it all together later on in his career, you only have to look at the ace of our staff. He's, what, 31? And he has put up some sick numbers. 11-5 with like 16 quality starts? A 2.21 ERA....the guy could easily be like 14-2 or 15-1, or even better. He lost 1-0 to the Tigers twice, got a ND against LA(his second worst start of the year....in that start, he was not feeling well at all, and still only gave up 3 ER in 5 IP....that was just when we were getting going....he could have easily won that game), we could have beaten the DRays in his start.....and there are numerous other starts that I'm not even thinking of. There was only one game that he truly deserved the loss, and that was his game against Seattle.

Cruz is like 24 or 25, and he has killer stuff. He doesn't put it together, we got ourselves another Esteban Loaiza. He does.....and we have a wicked nasty rotation.
