And its gotten a lot worse in Rio the last year or two, so those numbers will jump further. Security/crime issues are what will likely kill off Rio's chances.

It is extremely difficult to envision the IOC giving Rio the games considering the potential for violence (not necessarily to the athletes but certainly to tourists). Even if security was extremely high, the cost of the secuirty would pretty much make the games prohibitively expensive for Rio.

Bumping this because people are doubting Soxfan, but I watched the news and the IOC is very very impressed with Tokyo's bid as they would finance most of it, already have most of the facilities, and almost all events are within a 5 mile radius.

If you read the articles on this, they point out that the IOC said this after Chicago, and say it after every city visit.

I don't know. Every media outlet in Chicago yesterday sounded like Tokyo was the clear favorite at this point.

I only read the trib on this topic in the last few weeks, and it was quite clear that these compliments were espoused for Chicago and Tokyo alike.

They can say that but as much as the IOC will keep saying that they "pick cities, not continents", the recent games in Beijing and the fact Japan had Nagano not too long ago will play a major factor. Especially since the voting will be done only a year after Beijing there may be a "been there, done that" feeling amongst some voters. Politics definitely plays a role in this and I am convinced there is no way on earth Madrid gets the 2016 Games with the 2012 and 2014 Games in Europe already. Until the announcement is made, I won't believe that the games will be in any city other than Chicago or Rio.

SLC had the Olympics in 2002. Nagano was 1998. Wouldn't that be a bigger blow against a US city than against a Japanese one?

Good point, but, the US is so much larger in every measure than Japan... for Olympic purposes, if you look at history and frequency, the US is less like a country and more like a region. The equivalent for Chicago would be if Milwaukee had the winter Olympics recently.
