July 16, 200916 yr By far the single best part of the Royals season for me, screw Zack Greinke! Now I can begin to take my front office seriously again! Royals DFA Tony Pena Jr. By Mike Axisa [July 16 at 5:28pm CST] MLB.com's Dick Kaegel reports that the Royals have designated shortstop Tony Pena Jr. for assignment to make room on the roster for the recently acquired Yuniesky Betancourt. Pena has hit just .156-.178-.192 in 288 plate appearances since the start of the 2008 season.
July 16, 200916 yr Heh. He is really awful. I guess the new question is whether or not Betancourt will be more than a slight improvement.
July 16, 200916 yr I don't know why people get so upset about players like this. With 25 man rosters and 30 teams in the league, there are bound to be some bad players in the league, especially in places that don't have much of a payroll.
July 17, 200916 yr yet KC added a garbage player and took on a lot of salary (especially for them) with Betancourt. Oh those Royals will never figure it out.
July 17, 200916 yr Real good with the glove, not so much with the bat. I wouldn't be oppossed to signing him to a minor league contract.
July 17, 200916 yr Author QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 07:33 PM) Didn't Pena have one decent year at the plate? 2007. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 07:38 PM) That was Esteban German. No wait. Angel Berroa. No... Rookie of the Year.
July 17, 200916 yr QUOTE (High Mileage @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 11:43 PM) 2007. Rookie of the Year. That and $20 will buy a 5th of Jack for Joe Charboneau.
July 17, 200916 yr Didn't Pena have one decent year at the plate? a 66 OPS+ shouldn't be a decent year for anybody, but that was his career year. .267 BA, .284 BA. Man does he f***ing suck.
July 27, 200916 yr So the Royals are now seeing if they can convert Pena to a pitcher since he hits like one. Once he cleared waivers they said he would possibly go to their spring training complex and work on his mechanics.
July 30, 200916 yr Author QUOTE (JFields27 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) So the Royals are now seeing if they can convert Pena to a pitcher since he hits like one. Once he cleared waivers they said he would possibly go to their spring training complex and work on his mechanics. Certainly not the first time such a thing has been done...
