Anderson from my Cuban team was arrested

Featured Replies

I am sad guys. Leslie Anderson looks like was arrested during some intrasquads games in Cuba. Apparently, he was trying to defect in Europe in September during the IBAF World Cup. He is from my province. I hope he can get out by boat. The security came to Villa Clara stadium and took him away.

Thanks, guys.

It's sad that so many people are still enslaved by oppressive communist governments. I hope the day comes soon when talented Cuban baseball players don't have to risk their own or their family's safety just for the opportunity to compete in the Major Leagues.

I feel lucky to be in the USA.

Leslie Anderson is a good ballplayer. If i remember right he was one of Fidel's favorites. Hopefully, this will work in his favor.

Anderson is in Mexico. We need free agency and a contract for him soon. He played for my hometown team.

I'd love to bring Anderson into the fold. The kid can hit.

I'm curious how Cubans have these non-Latin names like Anderson or Chapman? I can understand the Russian-sounding names like Alexei but not these Anglo-type names.

A little Cuban history.

Native Cubans (Tainos, Siboneyes) inhabited the island. Then, the Spaniards came. Unlike the indians in Central America, North America and South America, the indians in the Caribbean were weaker as a race and were not as many as in other parts. They were very susceptible to illnesses combined with their small populations and hard labor, they were extinct quickly. The Spaniards who claim they discovered the new world, but the new world was already there brought Spanish names and last names. They also brought the Spanish guitar.

The Spaniards brought the slaves from Africa and their drums when no more indians were available. That is our West-African influence.

Spanish guitar plus drum = Son Cubano or Cuban Salsa which is the original. That Salsa name was given to Cuban music by Latinos in New York.

Going back to the history.

Some Americans came to Cuba. Some Chinese came to Cuba. Some Haitians came to Cuba. Some Jamaicans came to Cuba. Some Russians (not many) came to Cuba. Haitians and Jamaicans came looking for better opportunities before the Cuban Taliban Castro stole power.

Then, you have Leslie Anderson, Alexei Bell, Alfredo Despaigne, Aroldis Chapman, Michel Gorguet, Kenen Bailly, Pedro Poll, etc. Most of these Haitians and Jamaicans descendants are located in the east part of Cuba. Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguin...

I hope this help.
