southsider2k5
http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/01...works-show.html Chicago cancels July 3 fireworks show January 27, 2010 1:18 PM | No Comments | UPDATED STORY _fireworks306caption.jpg The Chicago Mayor's Office of Special Events has decided to cancel the traditional July 3 fireworks celebration in Grant Park, instead opting to organize three smaller fireworks on July 4 at Navy Pier and on the north and south lakefront. "But like in every level of government, the bad economy has challenged us to do more with less and to even more efficiently manage our limited resources," said MOSE director Megan McDonald in a statement. "We recognize that there are many who enjoy the Independence Day holiday in their own communities with friends and family, so we decided this year to bring the fireworks to them." The city has been holding the show on July 3 since 1975, starting at Olive Park north of Navy Pier, then moving to Grant Park in 1978. It replaced a longtime private show run by the American Legion at Soldier Field. Check back for additional details.
Balta1701
Man, and I was actually planning to be there for those. Guess we'll hit up a Sox game instead.
Flash Tizzle
Cmon, isn't this a bit ridiculous? This whole, "we have to cut back everything because of the economy" nonsense. I can understanding not paying a whole lot of money for a Christmas tree, but these fireworks draw large crowds. There are people who will go just for that. I doubt there will be nearly the amount of people attending as past years, and because of it, less money for the city. Awesome.

The Critic
Maybe Little Dick can outsource the fireworks and make people pay to watch them, like a peepshow. Giant curtain opens, BOOM BOOM BOOMBOOM, giant curtain closes, 10 more bucks please.
