Yea, so whenever my current 1993 Toyota Camry craps out and it becomes more financially sensible for me to just get a new car, I'm actually thinking of skipping Toyota for a generation due to all these acceleration problems and maybe get a Dodge.

 

I've been thinking about a used Dodge Magnum (discontinued), or a used Charger or Avenger.

 

If I get a used Dodge Magnum, I'm seriously thinking of a 2005 or 2006 model, but if I get a used Challenger or Avenger I'd prolly go older as old as a 2001 or 2002 model.

 

My question to everyone on the board is: Who has a history of owning a Dodge? Are they reliable?

 

Are they inexpensive to fix? Toyotas are relatively cheap to fix because how cheap the parts are, are Dodge parts cheap or are they more expensive because they're American?

 

What about the fuel efficiency? I'm used to getting less gas with a v4 toyota, and I'm wondering if I'll be shelling out considerably more for gas for a v6 Dodge.

 

And once again... about the Dodge Magnum, does anyone here own one or have anyone here owned one or know of anyone that owned one that can tell me if it's reliable and doesn't break down a lot? I've had a serious man-crush on that car and I'm waiting for the kelly book value of a used Dodge Magnum to go down more before I go to someone with a lowball offer.

The Magnum has a lot less room in it than you would think.

 

The Charger is cool but it will suck for the winter snow.

I owned a Chrysler New Yorker and was reasonably happy with it. I am currently driving an Intrepid which I am happy with. And I've had a couple three Ram trucks. I would not hesitate to buy another Dodge. Although currently I am leaning towards a Toyota truck as my next vehicle. Built in Texas and all.

I had a Durango and it was pretty nice... kind of bad gas milage but other than that very dependable. I actually like the Nitro which is the same as the new Liberty.

agreed, the Durango is a wonderful car, but the gas mileage made us get rid of it

Dodge/Chrysler cars generally get bad gas mileage, finish near the bottom of quality lists, and the company itself may not survive long. Also, every Chrysler/dodge product I've driven (usually rentals) have really bad sightlines for the driver. It is probably the last brand I'd ever look to buy.

The Dodge Brothers grew up in my hometown in the late 1800s; their dad had a machine shop and that's where they got the idea to build parts before moving to Detroit.

I have had 2 PT Crusiers, a 2001 for work and a 2008 for my wife, and both have been fine. The 2008 one seems a bit of a wuss in the acceleration department, but otherwise both have been and are fine. Had a 2001 Dakota truck I bought used that was one big clusterf*** from the moment I got it, had a minivan we bought new in 2001 that worked without any major issues until we traded it for the 2008 Cruiser, and I currently drive a 2001 Sebring convertible, which rides ok for a ragtop, has kickass speed, but burns oil. So my experience with them has been new is good, used has been a crapshoot.
