I know that the writer calls the Swisher trade a product of KW's learning time early on in his GM job, when it only happened a few years ago.

Well he talks about how the Cubs have produced next to nothing homegrown since Mark Grace. We're not exactly spittin' out homegrown talent either. Our first round picks from 2000-2006 were Joe Borchard, Kris Honel, Royce Ring, Brian Anderson, Josh Fields, Lance Broadway and Kyle McCulloch. That's not bad. That's just embarrassing. Yeah, we drafted Beckham. Took a 90 loss season (but at least we picked a good year to suck, as the '08 draft has a chance to be one of the best in years). But we're certainly in no position to be mocking the Cubs as far as player development goes. We're headed in the right direction, though.

The author sort of implied part of our player development has also been by buy-low acquisition, good FA pickups or great trades, such as Quentin, Jenks, Floyd, Alexei, but he did a horrible job of explaining it.

I got that part. And I agree. Kenny has pulled off some fabulous trades over the last 5 years or so (save the awful Swisher trade). But when I think homegrown I think draft, develop, bring 'em to Chicago. And we haven't done any of that outside of Beckham.
