Kind of funny. Never really thought of them as hated, especially these days. It's probably the most "celebrated", in terms of lore, thing about our franchise.

I wonder if this team was put on the list due to how they looked. I remember the days when Johnny Carson used to make cracks during the Olympics about how the East German women weren't exactly role models for Victoria Secret.

I know you weren't around (hell I was still very young), but that was a big deal at the time - East Germany and other eastern block countries had pumped their athletes so full of steroids it was hilariously obvious. Cheating at max power.

Plus we were in the middle of the cold war so it took on even more importance.

That was 9 years before I was born, but even I have seen plenty of allusions to that team on TV and such (enough that I know it was a big deal).

Gotta believe China's Womens Gymnastics team was close.
