Another comic strip censored

Featured Replies

Now, Newsday, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, as well as the Chicago Tribune have pulled the entire Doonesbury strip for a week to avoid offending radical Islamists Sarah Palin and her cult-followers.

I look forward to the Glen Rice comic strip...

Censorship is bulls***.

That being said, nothing in here suggests that Palin or her followers had anything to do with the censorship. It seems the newspapers did that on their own. So this isn't her or her followers fault. At least, not as far as I can tell from these sources.

i thought Sarah Palin followers were all illiterate hillbillies? if so, how would they even known what the comic was about and be offended?

Well the thing is they're censoring out of fear or reprisal from her nutty adherents, not because they've actually made threats beforehand.

How are you judging that this is the motivation for the people at these papers making this decision?

Because Andrew Sullivan told me so, Balta.

So in other words, it's a WAG.

It's a plausible explanation for refusing to publish a popular comic strip that's making fun of Palin. Can you think of another explanation?

To avoid losing subscriptions, to avoid controversy, to cause controversy and get its name put forwards, because business/editorial staffs don't think very much, to win a free ipad, etc.

Those are exactly the same thing I'm saying.

You don't think "Fear of reprisal" and "Threats" carries a different connotation from "I might lose a subscriber"?

:lolhitting Yes, Sarah Palin's followers are going to blow up the Chicago Tribune because they ran something mean about her. Nice fearmongring Cheney.

Eh go back to the OP, not the intentionally over-the-top language to compare it to the Danish cartoon of Mohammed controversy. The most plausible explanation here is that it's still far too dangerous in a business sense to make fun of a failed VP candidate who quit as a 1/2-term governor of Alaska.

I think you guys are taking a throw-away joke thread too seriously.

Just one guy...

I'm ugly and cannot take a joke. I blame Microsoft Excel for both of these problems.
