Winter Leagues thread

Featured Replies

The Venezuelan League opened on 10/11, Mexican Pacific League started on 10/13, and the Dominican League opened on 10/14.

The Puerto Rican League starts later, on 11/8. The Australian League starts on 11/1.

Watch here for a listing of Sox players on rosters in those leagues, I'll post something a little later today.

Santiago stated he was going to the Puerto Rican League I believe. Since he is probably the favorite for the 5th starter's role. he is gonna be the guy I wanna watch the most.

Sox Prospects/Players in the winter leagues (I bolded some names worth noting)...

VENEZUELA

RHP Wilce Nieves, Caribes de Anzoategui

RHP Scott Carroll, Leones del Caracas

C Miguel Gonzalez, Tiburones de La Guaira

OF Jose Martinez, Tiburones de La Guaira

INF Jose Lopez, Cardenales de Lara

RHP Leopoldo Sanchez, Cardenales de Lara

RHP Justin Cassel, Cardenales de Lara (last pitched in 2011 in Sox system, didn't pitch in 2012)

DOMINICAN

RHP Brandon Kloess, Estrellas de Oriente

C Tyler Flowers, Leones de Escogido

MEXICO

*No one, as far as I can tell

PUERTO RICO

*No rosters announced yet, season starts in early November

I didn't look at Australia, but the Sox don't usually send anyone down there. Seems like overall, the number of players is lower than in previous seasons. Maybe when the PR teams announce rosters, that will change.

Will MLB.com have the stats from these games?

Stats are already up for the leagues underway. No live game feeds though, just boxes and compiled stats after, as far as I can tell.

Is it customary to have so few prospects play winter ball?

I would have thought that more players would get that opportunity. What level player typically (?) plays winter ball ? AA? Are these the guys trying to make the 40 man roster after ST?

Players are of different backgrounds, and there for different reasons. But it does seem like a smaller number than usual. Puerto Rico, though, is often the most popular one for US players to go to, for obvious reasons, so the number may swell a lot when those rosters get announced.

Out of curiosity, any word on whether Morel is playing anywhere this offseason?

I checked the rosters and stats for all four Caribbean leagues, as well as the Aussie leagues, and didn't see anyone outside who I covered in the article. There may be some guys in Arizona, but I don't have any way of knowing that.

I tweeted him from the FS account... we'll see if he answers.

If nothing else, it'd be nice to know that his back was healthy enough to be trying to play somewhere, given that I don't know if we can afford to replace him.

@SoxNet no I'm not. Just concentrating on getting and staying healthy

Yes. Thus, I didn't write him into the article posted on FS.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mark Gonzales ‏@MDGonzales

Busy times for Sox pitching prospect Andre Rienzo, who threw 3 scoreless Sunday for LaGuaira in Venezuelan Winter League game. (more)

Riezno started WBC qualifier three weeks ago for Brazil at Panama after pitching in AFL, will pitch for Brazil in WBC tournament at Japan

Updates on a few players so far down south (be wary of small sample sizes here)...

VENEZUELA...

Carlos Sanchez (6 games, 17 AB): .353/.421/.529/.950

Brandon Short (7 G, 25 AB): .160/.192/.280/.472

Jose Martinez (16 G, 51 AB): .275/.315/.353/.668

Ray Olmedo (24 G, 44 AB): .182/.234/.205/.472

Miguel Gonzalez (30 G, 66 AB): .273/.380/.364/.743

Jose Lopez (34 G, 131 AB): .290/.369/.420/.789

Hector Gimenez (24 G, 92 AB): .261/.349/.478/.827

Ryan Kussmaul (6 G): 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

***Dan Remenowsky and Wilce Nieves are on rosters in VZ, but haven't appeared yet

DOMINICAN...

Conor Jackson (3 G): .400/.455/.700/1.155

Leyson Septimo (6 G): 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K

Santos Rodriguez (6 G): 4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Jhan Marinez (11 G): 7.2 IP, 11 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 7 K

***Tyler Flowers and Juan Silverio are on rosters but haven't played yet

PUERTO RICO...

Hector Santiago (5 G): 29 IP, 22 H, 6 ER, 13 BB, 24 K

Anthony Santiago (3 G): 4 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 2 K

Anthony Carter (10 G): 12.2 P, 13 H, 6 ER

FWIW, I am pretty sure Flowers wasn't going to play winter ball because of his injury. Also Anthony Carter signed with the Red Sox after the White Sox released him from the 40 man roster.

Nice to see Gimenez, Sanchez and Santiago all playing well. Gimenez is probably our back-up catcher, Santiago is gonna battle for the 5th spot and Sanchez will be ready if Bacon or Keppinger struggle.

I thought Flowers was going to play, just starting late. And I forgot about Carter.

I didn't have any idea what Jackson's deal was, so I figured I'd put him in there. Thanks.

That isn't what they said a while back. Maybe that has changed.

Jose Lopez is still with the Sox? Cool.
